    Hi all,

Does anyone know: for my creative writing task, am I able to base my piece of work on another piece of work?

I have an idea for an original short story based upon an Edgar Allan Poe poem, but I wasn't sure if I was allowed to or not?

It borrows the setting, a single word which one of Poe's characters speaks in his text, one of the character names, but other than that is a complete re-telling of the original tale and does not recreate any of the original text or speech within the his text. The Poe piece in question is also public domain now.

    Any ideas or advice?

    Thanks,
    Andy

It has to be based on the subject provided on the paper (paper 1 question 5). For instance you may get a picture of a light house in a storm (one of the sample papers) and it has be either a description of that picture or a story inspired by it. Thus a quotation is unnecessary and probably wouldn't fit in with the link.

Check out Mr Bruff's explanation of question 5 and see what he says. I'm pretty sure quotations weren't necessary, if they are then you would have to do the full reference (ie brackets with name of author, date of publication), with the repeat of this will the full information at the end. This could take up valuable time with no marks allotted to it.

NB I a presuming you mean AQA 9-1 English Language paper 1 question 5 on creative writing.

Oh, really? I didn't know that. I was told the creative writing would be literally just that: writing your own thing.

I'm doing the 9-1, but the WJEC course, not AQA.

It's well worth checking with your teacher as different boards ask for different things. Also it will help you clarify what you specifically need to do for each question.

Okey dokey. Maybe I misunderstood what was meant for the task.
