Is anyone else finding that with their course they are unsure on what to do?

Many other students from other uni's always talk about how much reading they've been asked to do however I haven't been told to read anything. Is it completely normal to have a lecture on something you've never heard of and the lecturer briefly speak about it then set you an essay for it months in advance till it needs to be handed in?
