Someone who I was speaking to from my old school said this to me when I felt that I was lonely, had no friends and thought that everyone hated me.

What does this ("There are lots of people who are very fond of you") mean? Is it possible for people to like you/care about you even though you don't really talk to them?

Well you poisoned their honesty. How can someone be honest when you go off about how lonely you are and how you feel you're so hated? Wouldn't believe their words... Though even if they're exaggerating it's likely there's at least a grain of truth... Your friend obviously likes you for example.

Nobody likes me because I have a disgusting disfigured-looking face.

You can like someone without having a meaningful connection to them. That's what it means. And lots of people like you a lot.

Maybe you need to establish that connection.

Yeah of course. There was a bus driver in my area who was always so happy, smiley and upbeat. He gave a thumbs up to show he had heard when someone rang the "stop" bell. I loved seeing he was driving the bus I was getting on. I never spoke more than a few words to tell him what ticket I needed but I'm still fond of him. He was great compared to most miserable drivers.
