Just keep trying, I got my first job in retail when I was 16. Never had any experience before that. So they do sometimes choose people completely new.

If you have time try going into places and see if you can do work experience, as it will look good on your CD.

Volunteer in a charity shop - that will give you retail experience

I volunteered in a charity shop before I even started applying for paid jobs as I knew the amount of applications would be high and how competitive it was. It gives you the relevant experience needed in a retail setting - customer service, using a till, re-stocking items etc.

Like others have said and suggested, try volunteering in a charity shop. That is the most common route how people get work experience.
Also it will look good on your CV as it shows to employers that you have taken some of your free time to do so - even without getting paid for it.

I have done a lot of volunteering whilst at university (juggling that with a part-time weekend job!) and it all paid off because I had learned so many things especially transferable skills that all employers look for.
