I know some of the people in the group but the new group have been friends for years. At the beginning of sixth form I clung to be people from my old high school but now we don’t really talk and just sit on our phones at lunch but I don’t really know how join this new group

Find areas of common interest, particularly if you do the same subjects. If you know some people in the group, start by making conversation with them whilst the others are around so they get used to being around you, and I'm sure that they will join in on your conversations with the people you know too!
