    Most of the gold atoms is a vacuum so goes straight through. The ones that are deflected are because the the positive nucleus repels the alpha particles

    The alpha particles are only deflected by the positive charge in the nucleus, so they can pass straight through the gaps between the nuclei of atoms in the foil, as they are not repelled.
