Cant see why, unless they were getting pressure from their parents or something....

You ever known anyone whos ended their life over exam results?

i heard on the news once that a girl jumped of a building because she was so stressed out,she felt that she couldnt handle the work load, quite sad really. her parents blamed themselves because they pushed her too hard, but i think in general, there is way to much work for exams.i cant handle it myself sometimes :frown:

This is a true story.

I don't know if anyone's been to Birmingham university, but in the middle of the campus there's a huge clock that's about maybe 150 foot (estimating here).

Anyway 2 students jumped off the top of the clock tower and died as they thought they failed their course. It turned out that they both actually passed. At Birmingham university they now lock the clock tower to make sure no-one jumps any more.

It is mainly pressure from parents or the fact that they have another member of the family that did great and you are always compared to them. I had a friend that tried to top himself because he was told by his family that if he didnt get a*'s then he wasnt good enough. I dont agree with this coz thats taking someones individuality away from. WHy dont parents and teachers realise that people are different even if they are related

A teacher at my school once told my class about a year 13 pupil who actually commited suicide during an A-Level exam. Apparently he had been depressed leading up to that point and not knowing any of the answers to any of the questions on the paper was too much for him. I won't go into the details of the way he killed himself - it isn't very pleasant.

i think that stress is a major factor while doing GCSE's and A levels, but i suppose if you did things to calm yourself down it would help...i am a very stressful person,im like panicking half a year early, cant seem to control it.

Sorry to scrape away the mystique but the Birmingham University clock tower story is urban myth.

If somebody takes their life because of exams then they're a moron. Even if there is parental pressure - which is letting them down more? An inability to put things into perspective is awful - but just as success doesn't transform you into a new person, neither does failure.

Some people do take their lives due to examinations but the number is tiny - all universities fall over themselves to help stressed people through schemes such as Nightline. Most of these individuals do so not just because of exams.

Could be a myth i was under the impression it was true because i don't know why the students would come up with a story like that. Although it is true about the clock tower being closed to stop people committing suicide from there.

You'd have to have a very sharp pencil.

Reply 13

Maybe. But there are other ways...

how? he smuggled a knife in lol? i find it hard to believe he killed himself actually in the exam hall

Reply 16

Compass, scissors maybe???

You could bring a knife in to the exam anyway. It's not as if the teachers check pockets or anything like that.

Sharpener blades, fountain pens, sharp pencils and determination.

Why is that so hard to believe? My history teacher still has the newspaper report from 1997 in his office.
He also told us of a sixth form girl who actually went into labour during an exam - I doubt the validity of that, however.

yeah but even if he did manage to slit them in the hall, he would have been rused out to hospital before he would have a chance to die!
