To what extent can my administrator monitor my account?

I have a Google For Education account for me to access at home to do homework and stuff. But one day I forgot to log out and had an innaproriate browsing session. My friend asked a computing teacher if IT support can see and he replied with 'No unless they were signed into chrome' I don't know if my friend asked the question correctly because his answer doesn't make sense to me if she asked 'Can IT support see your browsing history on your own device, own network but signed into the school account?' Doesn't signed into chrome mean the same thing as signed into school google account? I've researched about Gsuite and everybody said that the admins don't have access to browsing history if you weren't on the schools network. AlsoI was on my own device.
I can't imagine they can access it without you being on the school's network.
