try searching for holiday cottages on farms, thats how i've found most of my farming placements. e.g. http://www.borelandfarm.co.uk/frame.html - but I've not asked here yet

Hey Chatsworth in Derbyshire let you help out with the lambing at Dunsa Farm, I absolutely loved it, not for the squimish though as you will be elbow deep in sheep bits before the end of the first day!
If your parents are serious about the holiday thing then the Peak District is beautiful for walking and sightseeing.
Here are the contact details:

They also have a dairy farm nearby, hope that helps, good luck

I know a farm in Nottinghamshire but its not really a holiday destination. I agree with Dinkyferret the peak district is gorgeous. I've got a friend that has an organic dairy/sheep/pig etc farm in Derbyshire. Summers there are great.

I got my contact from my biology teacher who i thought knew nothing about veterinary medicine, one of her previous students parents had a huge sheep farm so i helped out there

Reply 5

You could contact your local vet they might know farmers sympathetic to our cause

Reply 6

Yeah, I got most of my placements through my local vets. They usually have to phone round some farmers first to see who will take you and then phone you back.

i cant wait for my lambing placement i have two weeks booked at the same farm i went to last year!!

You could always try the phone book/yellow pages but i would probably say it was a better idea to use any contacts you may have!! Ask friends family teachers vets just for anybody they know who could put you in touch with a sheep farmer!!

Ive got to go for an interview-type-thing for my lambing placement as they want to ask me what i want to do while there, and as ive never been lambing yet im not really sure. Surely its just a case of lamb the sheeps??? x

I also helped feed, clean (cubisan), water, lay down straw, (awful giant soggy bales which didn't unroll right!) place lambs and sheep in cubicles and trailers, dip the sheep, moor walk to chase the expecting ewes into a trailer, chase the escaping lambs, and the other stuff (which I didnt do) was to spray paint numbers and dock tails. It sounds busy but most of that gets done first thing in the morning and then we were all waiting for lambies to pop out, which always seemed to drag, then three would go off at once! Oh yeah, stopping random sheep from kidnapping lambs is hard work!
You definately want to get hands on experience of aiding a ewe, just ask after you've observed a couple of times. Also if you get an abnormal presentation which you're not comfortable with sorting out yourself, get someone ASAP as most turn out fine if your quick enough.

hey does anyone know where there is a farm in the west midlands (solihull area) that need lambing helpers? if so does anyone know if they pay? This isn't cause i'm really greedy, im in my gap year and need to save up money so cant really afford the time off, but would love to do it, and am considering applying to vet med in which case its good experience! I'm going to ask my vet but just wondered if anyone here had done it in the past! I can drive and I've just missed out on a really good oppurtunity (student beat me to it!!) - would really really appreciated any help!!! thank you!!

Does anyone know of any lambing contacts anywhere in country for week after easter, I live on the wirral but my parents said they will go anywhere on holiday and I can lamb there! Any contacts really greatfully recieved.

If you're only on the wirral try North Wales. We have lots of farms here, plenty of opportunity for lambing! Just around the corner too

Try a local agricultural college, they may allow you to help out over Easter.
