FLASHED BY SPEED CAMERA - will i be fined?

Hi there i was travelling in a 40mph road late last night with no other cars on the road. I was going at about 48mph, when there was 2 flashes from the front, which dazzled me. there was only 1 speed camera and this was on the opposite side of the road. Now i am pretty sure that these cameras only flash the back of the vehicle, and the camera only works for the side of the road it is on. does this mean i will be fined? if anyone has any ideas, that would be great.

thanks

if you were the only car on the road it must of been you or the camera going haywire(which I doubt) hope it has no film :s-smilie:

The ACPO prosecuting guidelines are 10% + 2 mph, which means the cameras will trigger at 46. Unless it was a dummy camera, or you didn't trigger it, you can expect a NIP (notice of intended prosecution). Also the camera could have been a Truvelo type, which are front facing. There is no point in worrying, but they must send out the ticket within 14 days.

I wouldn't rule this out completely, I seen a geniune video (on another forum) of a car setting a camera off heading towards it (it was a Gatso) and not breaking the speed limit. The guy said it did it every morning on his way to work with no other cars on the road, it must of been some sort of reflection of the signal.

But the chances of this happening are extremely remote, if the camera flashed you and there was nobody else around its safe to say you'll be receiving a letter in the next 2 weeks or so.

But the camera was on the otherside of the road

IME most places where the cameras are on each side the they are not on exactly the same spot - so the question is, did you go over any lines when it flashed?

Exactly same thing happened to my mate, he was driving through city and the camera on the other side flashed him, If you are over the speed limit you can't argue. He got 3 points on his license and a fine.

no there were no lines on the road

This thing happened to me a looooooong time ago, 5-6 years?
I was in the car, which my mum was driving. It was some dark road, and the speed camera flashed on the opposite side of the road. I think she was OVER the limit, so we were worried too! But nothing came, so I guess it must have been a black car with it's lights off that must have triggered it:biggrin:

Oh i see:smile:
I thought the newer ones were digital, the older ones had film but i guess there's no way in telling the difference.

in a word:

yes.

Well exactly where did you get flashed ?

If you get a NIP and the camera was on the other side of the road, ask for evidence and i think if they try and prosecute you from a camara on the wrong side it won't stand up in court as it is not accurate enough.

You were speeding tho, but i doubt it was 46mph if it was 48mph on your speedo. My speedo in my car overreads by 5mph, so even with 10%+2 i could be doing 51mph indicated speed before i get caught

I don't think its the fine, but the 3 points you should worry about. You only need 6 ponits in the first two years of passing to get banned.

Not exactly. They must either be 100% on, or over read by 10%. The latter is easier for manufacturers to achieve. Get someone with a Sat Nav (Tom Tom) to sit in your car. The speed reading from those is dead on balls accurate. There are other programs available that can measure your speed to two decimal places. It is a common misconception that the speed on these is calculated by averaging the distance moved in a certain period of time, but it is actually calculated by the Doppler shift of the device (in the vehicle in motion) relative to the satellites.
