The ultimate student roadtrip car - reliable simple cheap and easy to maintain - help

Hey guys. I'm looking at, with four friends, this summer, buy a cheap second hand car, and drive to every capital city in europe we can (Paris->Berlin->Bern->rome->French Riviera->Barcelona->South of Spain-> Ferry->Ibiza) on a massive tour of every world-class club in europe, with a lot of laughs and spills along the way.

We'd need a car that could fit four people, four people's gear for three-four weeks, be reliable, cheap to maintain and run, good on petrol, and cheap and SIMPLE to fix with an excellent mechanical brain, haynes manual, and basic(ish) toolkit.

We'd be living out of hostels and camping municipals.

The ultimate student roadtrip car.

What can you guys suggest?

I, knowing very little about this, thought of things like old saab 9000's, or volvo 440s, or even older vw passats. Maybe ladas?

I don't know, but you guys do. HELP!

After looking, something liek an old citroen 1995 zx looks doable, 500 quid is about the amount we'd spend.

80s Range Rover V8 you can get for about £500

My mate got a pretty ropey one admitedly for £400 but it had the 3.9V8 which was still in good order and you could fit all 4 of you, plus luggage and the occassional girl in no prob!

Have you considered Interrail? It's bloody cheap and the European rail networks are amazing. www.interrailnet.com

I'm doing a european tour on that this summer.

You need a volvo or a VW without question. The 'snub nosed' passat is always a safe bet. (http://www.murphyauctions.net/images/kenmore06mar/967.jpg) They're reliable, cheap, roomy and comfortable. Not to mention parts for them are easy to get hold of. Be careful of diesels pre-millennium though, they were dirty underpowered unreliable engines back then. Basically if you cant get a turbo diesel then get a petrol.

We wanted the fun of a car. A proper road trip. They're amazing but you can't take nowhere near as much cool ****, nor go quite as many places as otherwise.
Diesel is really cheap on the contienent, and better for the environment, so definitely get a diesel whatever you do.

Naturally I should suggest a Land Rover. But, as you want it to be good on fuel and reliable and cheap, they're out the question!

I'm going to have to go with an old diesel Volvo Estate. Preferably in a dark blue with 'baby-poo-brown' interior...

LMFAO.
err... yes......
That is of course the first issue that should be on the OP's mind in doing a tour of the continent.

Well, okay, but I mean you have to buy less of it.
Original VW beetle. I mean, Top Gear took one across africa!
If your set on doing a roadtrip go for it - sounds fun however i'd definitely reconmend using the interrail link posted above. Me and my friends are doing the interrail in the summer and seriously you can go everywhere in europe and much much quicker than using a car.
Main reason we decided not to go for a car however is drinking. Is there one of you going on the trip who isn't drinking and can you all drive? As in all honesty we thought it was potentially very dangerous driving on a different side of the road with 3 other drunk people in the car. And that's not even taken into account the fact that the driver won't be able to drink and willl therefore have lots of crap nights looking after his drunk friends!

Haha, i would love to see you fit 4 people in that plus luggage!

Actually, would be class to have all the suitcases on the roof!
Ooooh I don't know anything about cars but stumbled across this, and it sounds really interesting. I know what you mean about inter-rail, as you can really only take a back pack with you, and fit as much as you can in there!

You could save up and get a campervan... so old school.
