Hi everyone,

Please can I ask your advice on something? I am so upset and feel like I have nowhere to turn for help.
My tutor has always had an issue with me. I had previously enrolled in her class four years ago but within a month had to leave for personal reasons that I did not disclose with the college. When I started back in September this year she was one of two tutors. During the first class, she walked around the classroom with a clipboard asking for everyone’s name and when I went to say mine she interrupted abruptly saying “I know who you are”, to the shock of those I was sitting beside. Since then she has been incredibly hostile towards me and often completely ignoring my questions. On one occasion I asked her a question and her response was “for goodness sake” rolling her eyes and tutting. Other students have noticed and have asked me what her problem is. I really don’t understand it, I am such a quiet and polite person as I have social anxieties and understand how hard it can be to socialise. I have never spoke to her on any occasion outside of the classroom.
This week she gave us the results of our first assignment and to say I am completely and utterly devastated is an understatement. I only achieved 50% while my friends who submitted work of a similar standard received percentage grades of around 90%. I tried so, so hard in that essay, I really did. She has accused me of copying my essay. I was in the college library everyday reading up on each subtopic. I ensured I understood everything before writing how I understood things even drawing illustrations and diagrams to back up my text. I read over the essay so many times I can recall it word for word.
We were given a complete outline of the essay; what to include and points within such subtopic. Surely everyone’s is going to similar, why has she accused me of copying but nobody else?
The only other criticism on her mark scheme was that I went beyond the level of work that is required for the course.
I obviously find her very unapproachable so decided to contact the head of department for advice and to ask the possibility that my essay could be cross-marked by another tutor. Their response was that all essays are marked fairly and in line with the college’s policies and that I should ask the tutor how my “essay was marked in line with the marking criteria”. I really wanted someone else to look at my essay as I believe it is worth up to 30% more than has been awarded. I do not think discussing it with this tutor will result in my grade increasing by as much.
I am so sorry for my rushed question, I am so upset and feel like no one will help me.

Thank you so much for your help

maybe try rallying lots of your peers together and approach the head of department again? or approaching the other tutor?

Ascel's post is the best!

I would add that you should request that another tutor re-mark your work, without seeing the mark given by the first tutor. If you've gone beyond the level required for the course, your marks should be a lot higher than 50%.

They should then compare the original marks given on your work (by the first tutor) against the marks given to the rest of your class. The done by another student that's similar to yours (I.e. they've also gone beyond level required), should also get a similar mark to your work, if the first tutor has been fair.

The tutor doesn't have to like you as a person, but they do have to treat you with respect and in a fair way.

Sound like this teacher got a problem with you or simply she can’t stand how smart you are as a student. You should file complaint against her sounded like she was discriminated against you and falsely accused you without any proofs.I had similar experience at College, not in (American version College), discriminated against me and told me to go to another college which was special needs because I was taking my time because I was making my work perfect. End of the day she didn’t get rid of me because I went straight up to her boss department and filed complaint.
