Answers:

8. b. a = 1 or a =7

9. b. p = -3, q = 3

10. b. a = 0, b = 0

I can do part a of these questions but I can't do part b of either of them.I have no idea how to actually go about solving them.

Can you either provide me with a worked solution or point me in the right direction?

Thank you.
the area scale factor is connected to the Determinant of the transformation matrix.

8 b) What is the area of triangle TT in terms aa?? Then you just have det(A)(area of T)=60\det(A) \cdot (\text{area of T}) = 60 and just solve for a.

9 b) Note that a matrix of enlargement scale factor aa is of the form (a 00 a)\begin{pmatrix} a \ 0 \\ 0 \ a \end{pmatrix}

10 b) Well, just multiply the matrix by the point (a,b) and equate the top row to a5ba-5b and bottom row to 4b4b, these give you 2 eqs. in 2 unknowns.
