Please could you help me interpret this advice? Watch

Someone was advising me on how to go about mixing with others socially and finding and making friends.

They said 'As for picking friends, don't shut anyone out, you'll come to learn how to spot who is good for you '.

What is the meaning of this advice - what did they mean by 'don't shut anyone out'?

Also, what is the significance (if any) of the smiley face in this sentence? Does it suggest that they are being friendly in saying it/are perhaps implying that they are a friend?

I take it as, don't make initial judgments and keep an open mind about people because in time you will discover which ones are true friends.

As for the smiley face.. that could mean anything. It just seems as though they're giving advice and being friendly.

Does that mean like don't shut myself off from people? Something like don't overanalyise/worry about fitting in?

Yes, just go with the flow. Don't try too hard, just be yourself and be nice to everyone. Don't overanalyse friendships and let them take their own course.
