Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if there is anyone here that is moving to Plymouth uni next week? I am staying in Radnor Halls which are apparently quite nice.

Would also be good to hear from anyone that moved into Plymouth last year so they can share any experiences of their first week at Plymouth?

Cheers dudes!

I started at Plymouth last year, you definitely have good accommodation, Radnor is the best - bigger rooms, new kitchens etc well worth the extra expense. The only downside is it’s furthest from the pubs and the main buildings where you will probably have to go to for lectures. I applied for Robbins and was stuck with Gilwell last year which are cheaper ~£55/week but not worth it unless you are broke, its nearest to the uni but isn’t too nice although it is very social.

My first week was great, although if you haven’t bought them already I wouldn’t get tickets for any of the freshers week events unless you know anyone going, I didn’t go to any and I heard none were that great, you will also be able to buy tickets during the week when you know which events will be more popular. As far as what to do you should probably look at the leaflets you will be bombarded with whenever you leave your halls, clubs and pubs will be doing special offers; prices of drinks are ridiculously cheap in Plymouth anyway. You will most likely have an organised pub crawl the day you move in where you will go to the most popular pubs and bars, The Fresher and Professor, The Roundabout and The Skiving Scholar are where most people from halls drink regularly. I probably spent most of the first week in those pubs and you will soon learn where to go on what day.

The Roundabout does £1/pint on Tuesdays and offers a discount card “The Yellow Card” which is worth buying straight away, its only £1 and you will usually get 20-30p off per drink. It’s a big pub on three levels with two bars, it will get packed on Tuesdays so you want to be going out by 8:30 if you want a seat.

The Skiving Scholar isn’t really a great pub, it gets completely rammed on most weekend nights and doesn’t really have any selling point apart from being between halls and the student union. It’s pretty dingy and smells in the downstairs which is below ground level.

The Fresher and Professor is a great pub, fairly small but the drinks are ridiculously cheap, you can get a shot and a mixer for 99p. It’s very friendly and has a pool table, make sure you get the “Terminators” which are £7.50 for two, I can’t remember exactly what it is but two gets most people pissed so its very cheap and tastes great. You should also try to see which bartender is making it the strongest and stick with them, some of the staff put a noticeable amount less vodka in.

I can’t really give much advice on which clubs to visit as I wasn’t too impressed with them, C103 is very popular but is poor, the only night I think is worth it is student night on a Wednesday. Zanzibar was fairly popular last year although I didn’t go there, they did £9 for all you can drink but have recently stopped, they may do it again but you will hear if they do. The barbican has better clubs really and is a bit more relaxed.

You should be aware of the situation for students going out though, we aren’t to popular with the locals and there are some places you should avoid unless your in a group of at least a few people, Union Street has a lot of clubs and can be pretty rough as the proportion of locals to students is greater, there are a lot of police but its still not somewhere you want to be hanging around after leaving clubs. It’s a fair distance from halls anyway so its worth paying the £4-5 taxi, it only works out as about £1 each. Don’t take this the wrong way though, Plymouth isn’t too dangerous but I wasn’t warned about this till lectures started when we were warned by lecturers.

Bloody hell I went on for a while, probably because I can't wait to get back at the weekend, I'm a fresher again as I changed my course. Which course are you taking?
Radnor? I was Fresher last year and applied for a room in Radnor but didnt get One, and I got stuck in Gilwell aswell!

My room was facing skivin scholar and cuba and ride, so i used to get music from all ends, its would be most annoying when your trying to get sleep due to starting work at 6am the next morning!!

I felt insecure in Gilwell, but thats only cos students were walking where they liked and trashed other peoples "Flats" oh yeah, and letting strangers into trash them was another big thing in Gilwell!

what floor were u on rich? I was 1st floor, but u had to goto the 2nd floor to get to mine cos it was like a little hidy hole where we were!
