Best and Worst of Sheffield?

Stealing an idea from another thread! For us upcoming Sheffield peoples, I thought it might be nice if people shared their experiences of the city in terms of nightlife, food, places to go, things to do, whatever! Steer us clear from the dodgy takeaways and all!

So..

Best things?

Worst things?

BUMP!
I'm so eager for September and coming to Sheffield for the first time so I NEED this type of info to hold me over for now !!

Well I don't really reply to many threads but I'll help you out if you're interested. I'll tell you abit about me first so you know if your similar. I'm 18 and just finished my first semester as a fresher, studying at Sheffield Hallam as the course is better for what I want do than at Uni.

I love going out, I enjoy sport and like lots of nights out although do like the odd night in aswell!

Ok first of the student accommodation in the city is great, its like a whole part of the city is full of students, and student accommodation, all within probably a 0.2 mile radius so its awesome just being able to see your mates and nice when you walk to uni all people of similar ages etc.

All the nightclubs you want are literally about a 2 minute walk, and then the city centre shops which have a wide variety of fashion outlets is just a further 5 minute walk, 10 max.

Since being here I have never once had to use a vehicle, everything is so close. And if you wanted to go to meadowhall or somewhere there are trams running constantly.

The locals are really friendly and helpful, I've not got a bad word to say about the people i've come across who are non-students. We provide alot for the local economy and so they target us alot more than some other university cities.

There are so many things to do and places to see, and if you wanted there is just a small journey to go to the peak district for a change of seen from a busy city. If your concerned about getting home the trains are cheap and are right next to student accommodation, I've walked with around 2 cases and a rucksack before because its that close.

Talking about my uni now, I would say it is great and really fun learning and actually seeing motivated staff who are interested in what they are teaching. Not sure about your experiences but in school many teachers just tend to opt for the easy way out of setting text book exercises.

Also the student nights are cheaper than most I know from other mates who are at uni, on many student nights you can get drinks for a £1, and also on a Monday and Wednesday you can get vodka mixers, bottles of stella, strongbow etc. all for 60p!

Theres plenty of culture and people from all around the globe nevermind the UK. So far i've met Spanish, someone from Gibralta, someone from USA, Canada and people from the continents of Asia and Africa.

The thing I probably love most is about how theres so many students within the one area and theres a real sense of security and community. You also can easily have a choice, whenever you want to do something, you can, because theres so many people doing stuff and so much on. But at the same time its just as easy to relax and keep yourself to yourself!

I'm perhaps a bit naive because I've only got around 3 months to judge Sheffield, so as of yet there is nothing bad other than theres too many kebab places and not enough chippys!

I moved from a quiet wirral area near Liverpool and I couldn't wait to get back after Christmas.

Hope that has helped, feel free to ask anything if you want to know more

its called food station now I think, but you're right, its a 'hole. The guy who runs it is funny though

northern sole in broohill is a good takeaway, and just across the road from food station.

god its called food station??? i haven't been to get takeaway in broomhill for too long lol! northern sole used to be good (after corp-cajun chicken burger and chips yummmm) but friery was always better! tony was a ledge! i see him around now (he is a landlord of my neighbours) and he always says hello haha

yeh its called food station (no link apparently to Lunch Station on glossop) it is rank but does do the cheapest Cheesy Chips haha.

Sole for the Win!

the thing you'll hate most when you come is the hills but you very quickly get used to them, and you end up stomping down the same roads so you know what hills are coming next.

Everything is cheap cheap cheap

Easy walking distance to everything you need

Bad things -

Quite a few hills

Too far north :P

Train fares damn expensive

i work in meadowhall, i see them my WHOLE shift, it makes me cry ahah, and half the time i'm convinced they are just talking in fluent polish to me, so i make them point to what they want (i work in a gadget shop with everythign locked in glass cabinets haha)

Personally, I don't find the nightlife as good as I expected. It's on a MASSIVE scale and hideously cheap, but I tend to find most of the clubs lack atmosphere and the music is poor. Availability of fast food is good, although I too would like to see more chippies. The nearest one to me is dreadful.

Thats why you shouldn't live in Opal2 haha

youve got Friery and Northern Sole in broomhill (and millenium but we ignore that one)
Aslans on West Street is alright tho, only been there a couple of time though.
Corp has atmosphere (amongst other diseases haha), and leadmill is a good night out. I'm not a big fan of embrace, but its still decent on a monday.DQ's on Sunday with the right people is a good night as well

Yep chippies is a shocking feature, its cold by the time I would bring it home so thats a bit naff. I know what you mean about lots of the clubs, I do love my nights out but the likes of embrace and stuff do lack atmosphere alot of time. I like plug aswell when Shuffle is on etc. but then thats on a weekend so wayyy more expensive.

Aslans are likely to poison you! Well, not quite that bad, but their chips and cheese sauce (cheese SAUCE!!!) is pretty bad. Go to Crown instead! Corp is reasonable but only for a deliberately cheesy night out tbh. Leadmill is sometimes alright but I think the DJs are trying to be too clever and alternative, instead of just playing what people actually want. DQ on a Sunday... nice environment but couldn't stand the music and unbelievably expensive on the bar.

Yeh leadmills are good nights out normally, although if you go the same night each week to it you get to know the entire set at times, but alot of the night outs depend on your company aswell, with my mates alot of the time could have a good night anywhere, even though having to accept its going to be cheese for it all

I cant stand the little council estate scum.

And thats not a knock at council estates in general, just the absoloute total scum of socitety whom happen to frequently scav off of benefits on them.

I lived on an estate, and i guess by most stanards I turned out ok; University student, had numerous jobs since i turned 16, never once been arrested.

Just pisses me off when all these school dropouts blame their situations on their childhoods and where they grew up. Maybe if you didnt all phuck around in school you wouldnt be in that damn situation.

/rant

I hate chavs.
