Oxford was founded by a breakaway group of monks from Luton Abbey which later became Luton Univerisity™.
the renegades needed a source of income and soon one of their number, Brother Morris, came up with a revolutionary model of four wheeled cart. soon these wooden wonders were seen throughout the county at markets and public executions and the fledgling institution flourished. in honour of the monks' distinctive hooded habits the cart production site on meadowland was dubbed Cowl Leigh.

Oxford sounds like Oxfam, and Oxfam is a charity shop so Oxford is basically a charity shop. Also Oxford was founded by monks, and monks are basically monkeys, so it's a charity shop founded by monkeys.

They are the best because they have a long history in the back.

They were the only 2 universities for hundreds of years. (In england).

After 1800s Durham and the rest of universities started to appear on picture.

I strongly believe Imperial and UCL can be the same level as Oxford. The difference is that Oxford has more famous people than both of them.

:five:

in the 19th Century the population of Oxford became worryingly overweight as the need for hard manual toil was outsourced to immigrants from the Low Countries.
an enterprising Keble don called Professor Seymour Legge invented a revolutionary set of exercises to be performed to the catchy new Ragtime music.
His method of rhythmic callisthenics become known as the Oxford Movement. It really took off when the young Queen and Empress Victoria was seen performing the exercises in the nude at Balmoral with her trusty manservant John Brown operating the phonograph.
It's not the best for absolutely everything (academically or otherwise), but they're pretty damn good and def right up there for lots of things! :smartass:

They're easily the most prestigious; going to Oxbridge will greatly increase your chances of employment if you get a first when compared to another universities student who got a first but I've never really understood it. What should really matter is the teaching, which apparently most universities suck at anyway so then it comes down to what facilities they can provide; Oxbridge will obviously have some of the best. Then it should be student satisfaction rates, I mean if students aren't happy going to the university I don't think I could see it as one of the best; LSE is probably the best example; one of the most prestigious but quite poor in satisfaction rates.

Prestige is really measured by how famous they are and how they are viewed regardless of whether they are good or not; Oxbridge are frequently shown in movies as being two of the best in the world and therefore they are. Entry requirements is also another things that determines prestige; the higher the ER, the more that people will want to get into it to prove they are smart. Finally, how much employers put value in it determines prestige.

In terms of 'best', what are they the best in? I don't think they have the highest SSR but they are easily up there; they will definitely have some of the best facilities; the teaching will be something that is highly subject as they can't be the best for everyone but they are likely high up in here, given the satisfaction rates, just a guess though. Given all this, Oxbridge are without a doubt, the most prestigious, but they might not be the best; but what do i know, I don't go there.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Camby-tab was founded by a group of breakaway Oxfordians, who, distressed that King Henry III didn't recognise their automatic right to every third woman in the city of Oxford, dishonorably (and without consulting their wives or, worse, mothers) fled to a dismal fenland near Ely. This was inhabited by monks, slithering about in the muddy fields, who were in league with some papal bull (this can be recognised by the odour coming off it, as well as a tendency to repeatedly spout nonsense but when not making headway, shouting LOUDER AND LOUDER every time, which is common to every so-called 'Cantabrian') and, denouncing the mere idea of law, established a separate "oooniversity" in the fens, known for ever afterwards (1231-present day) as "Fenlande Polytechniche", which in Old High Norman translates as "Dogs Weeing Place".

Since then, for the most part the strange Fenland place has been largely unrecoverable and is now infested with people practising something very odd called "Ye Science". We hear this is a branch of The Alchemie and much prized amongst the lower sort of person.

Some with a first from Oxford won't look better than someone with a first from, say, Manchester or Birmingham?

To be honest, it's going to be irrelevant compared to the rest of their application and their ability to jump through hoops at assessment centres and interviews.
