Hey, I have to choose two books for a comparative essay for my English literature coursework and I was thinking about doing my essay based on the theme of science and the supernatural. I initially wanted to do Frankenstein and the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, although i have been told by my teacher that I can’t choose the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because it’s a GCSE book, but that I am allowed to choose Frankenstein. As a result I have decided to choose another book that links both with the theme of science and the supernatural and Frankenstein, but I’ve been struggling to find one since I would like to specifically choose a book that’s from the 19th century as well. Could anyone please give me any advice or suggestions.

Dr Faustus? It's not 19th century I think (I haven't studied it) but I think it might work well. For AS I studied Never Let Me Go and Frankenstein but NLMG doesn't really incorporate the supernatural. Just some ideas off the top of my head - maybe check the 'Science and Society' comparative texts for Edexcel, that's where I studied NLMG and Frankenstein, I think War of the Worlds and the Handmaid's Tale are also on there. Hope some of that helps 😊
