Smoking??

Well I think it was on this forum where I read post about how smoking has some benefits and the such. And I was just wondering whether it would actually be good to smoke like a cigarette once a week, fortnight or month? As in you'd get the benefits that smoking has but not have the health risks that daily smokers have. Anyone think that would work? Im not going to start smoking or anything like that, was just curious about the idea lol.

I ver much doubt it. I'm not a medic and I haven't read the other thread, but smoking just doesn't feel like it's doing you any good. I can't understand what health benefits there could possibly be.

I think you should err on the side of caution and just not smoke.

I'm off for a cigarette now...

Could you control it though? remember it's addictive...

Didn't doctors prescribe cigarettes for stress before they realised how murderous smoking was?

LawYah: Yeah thats why I wouldn't try it, just wondered on whether it would work or not lol.

Thats exacltly how you start, because you think you can control it butthe truth is you can't. Once you start its very very hard to quick, trust me its not worth it. I smoked for nine years but I am really glas that I quit. Smoking kills.

Smoking has benefits? no chance, just a downward spirial to be addicted to the fags, costing yoiu your health and a stack load of money, its a silly idea.

I've been smoking like that for the past couple of years. 'Social smokers' they call us. I've no regular pattern for smoking; sometimes there'll be a few days in between a cigarette, sometimes weeks, occassionally I'll have a smoke 3 nights on the trot if I'm going out lots. Basically, I only have a smoke after a few drinks when I'm out, but not every time. Never felt addicted nor had an urge to smoke during the day. I just like the act of smoking, the nicotine does nothing for me. Maybe I'm just lucky.

It doesn't work like that. There are some beneficial effects in cigarettes (Can't remember them off the top of my head, but Parkinson's isn't one of them) but there's not dosing equation you could work out about gaining benefit without drawback. They're a difficult thing to work out the contents of anyway because combustion completely alters whatevers in it.

As far as social smoking goes, you nearly always underestimate your intake and you're always at risk of smoking more. Any nicotine in your system whatsoever has certain drawbacks with regard to blood clotting and you wouldn't believe how many "Social smokers" come through a morning chest clinic in a district general.

Theres a link between smoking and alzheimers, I did an essay on it last week (not that I can remember the specifics lol)
Smokers are less likely to get alzheimers or something like that, but those who do will generally have it worse and die younger. I think the study was by Brenner et al (1993) but dont quote me on that.

I'm not sure what benefits there could be, but it does help my anxiety.

Smoking is cool, because cool people smoke. Heavy smoking will knock and average of 7 years off your expected life span. When a poll was given out to smokers and none smokers people estimated a lifespan 9 years shorter than usual. People over estimate the harm done by smoking.

"Smokers are generally out going, risk takers with better sex lives", Malcom Gladwell, Tipping Point.

If you attended a room full of rockstars, models and actors, how many would smoke?
If you attended a room full of scientists, computer whizzes and techies how many would smoke?

Remember your first cigarette? What as it like? It's to do with genes too. Tests were done on mice with nicatine. One bottle of water had nicatine, one bottle was clean.

Some mice reacted to the nicatine drinking it often, some mice didn't like it (after all it is a poison). But the am ount of nicatine, it's effect, the rush is entirely genetic and also assosiated with our experience of the first hit.

Research also shows that smokers have more active sex lives, and are often more socialble than nonesmokers.

It's quite a popular self-medication for that - seems people are happier to smoke than to see their GP about it, even though it's worse for their health than what help they could get there :frown:.

agreed. the act of smoking is undeniably cool. i only smoke when i'm feeling especially self destructive (almost 100% of the time when i go out and drink :p:) but not really addicted to it or owt. never had the urge to smoke it when i'm alone and sober. just do it 'socially'.

I thought it was well known that the supposedly stress relieving effect of cigarattes is a placebo? The only reason people feel relief when they have a cigaratte is because they feel edgier the rest of the time as they're not getting any nicotine, and the cigaratte brings them back to what would otherwise be a normal level.
