OK, this is an approximate list created by listening to the musicians I am surrounded by so nobody hit me, right?

1. St John's
2. Trinity
3. Clare
4. King's (those who are musically talented seem to say that although King's have the fame, they don't have the quality of John's)
5. Caius-Selwyn - probably about the same given the way they're talked about

Emmanuel-Peterhouse - they never mention them so they can't be that good  Girton is up there. Corpus are supposed to be not bad I think. Jesus men's are quite good.

1-4 are traditionally considered way ahead of the rest of the field and I think that's fair.

I thought it would be helpful if we could compile a list (in order) of the best Cambridge choirs because there is often a lot of controvery on this subject. For ease I will write up a list (not in any particular order) of the choirs which should be considered. It is your job to put them in an order!

Trinity
St. John's
King's
Clare
Gonville & Caius
Selwyn
Peterhouse
Emmanuel

(feel free to include any more)

i wonder where John Edleston was?

Not that I'm biased in any way

1)St. John's
2)Clare
3)King's
I've never heard Trinity, but they're meant to be up there, just not quite as good as Clare
Caius and Selwyn probably next. I haven't heard any of the others

King's is better than Clare and John's, surely? It like one of the most famous choirs in the world.

Fame has never been synonymous with quality.

It's more famous, but I prefer Clare's. The boys at King's this year haven't impressed me deeply. (that's the choirboys, not the men there!)

But they're like, going to be professionals; they can't be crap. I know nothing about the technical aspects of singing, but they sound the most like the abbey choir.

They're not crap, far from it - they are King's college choir and arguably the most famous chapel choir in the world. But I prefer Clare and John's sound to them. And not all the boys will be professionals - half of them will hit puberty, get moody and forget about singing. Even Aled Jones did that for a while. There are just a few nuances in the tone and stuff that sounds slightly unpolished on occasion.

Also, if you're going to join King's choir then you accept being conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

Which isn't ideal for most.

I would love to say I know what you're talking about, but I really don't. I know who he is, but nothing about him.

I know a couple of boys that went professional, there was probable more, but I wasn't in with the choir gang; not my scene.

Thing is, having the voice of an angel as a 10 year old is no guarantee that they'll have an equally good voice once it has broken (and most boys need to take out a year or two while this happens and to re-train). Yes, choirboys are at an advantage because they have had the classical training, but sometimes you've either got it or you haven't, so they don't all make it. I've known several stunning trebles go to indifferent baritones (and equally one heart-rendingly-beautiful treble become an equally gut-wrenchingly-good tenor )

I don't think it's that exciting. While he's obviously an amazing musician, apparently he's a huge slave-driver and not the most charming of men. (Admittedly I only have one source)

Oh yeah, I've heard that. But Tim Brown is also quite scary in that line of things.

I've only met Cleobury once, but he seems nice enough. The wrath of Mr Brown is in another league altogether, I assure you... :frown:

Thankfully I'm not good enough to ever have to be exposed to it :frown:

Apparently Cleobury got pissed off by the choir's peformance in one service so just stopped conducting the piece. The choir had to try to finish it together by themselves
