What is the length of a DNA molecule determined by?

I asked my biology teacher at school- she didn't know, I looked it up and couldn't find an answer-
Do any of you guys know?
I think it may be the number of genes??

Obviously
The order of bases in the DNA molecule code for specific amino acids. Maybe the length is determined by how many amino acids are actually neded? I don't know, stab in the dark. I guess you've also got non-coding sections too. So how long is a length of string?
