No. It's for people who are interested in different subjects.
Land Economy is like a joint-honour degree (of a sort), combining Economy, Law, Geography & some Management.
LE & Eco require different skills, different interests, and different intentions (with th exception of the economics component). It has something of a reputation as a 'doss' subject, but that is in a similar way to that in which we all take the piss out of John's. That is, it's fine really!

What's more, you'd have to have seriously differing interests & skills to want to apply for both, even if you could.

Is Land Economy just for people who arent good enough for economics?
and what is your opinion on applying for both courses at cambridge?

I'm sure for some it is, for others it's because they love gardening. Those are the only two reasons though. Obviously.

I'm doing a Spatial Planning degree, and part of the core content is Land Economy (same for surveying and property students too) but I also have to take both the Micro and Macro economics modules like outright economics students do as that's one of the stipulations set out by the RTPI in order to be accredited.

I know someone that applied for Land Economy here just because he knew he wasn't good enough to get in for straight Economics (all his other choices were Economics)...

I think though it might be less competitive than straight Economics it's still more competitive than loads of other subjects believe it or not. The overall acceptance rate is 25% compared to many other subjects that are a lot higher (http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/camdata/undergraduate.html) so basically I don't think it's an easy route either.

1. Did he get in?
2. Was he a sportsman? :p:

(The answer will surely either be yes to both or no to both)

Yes and no.

Oh, wow. So not all the Land Economy places are reserved for sportsmen. Learnt something new today!

None of the Land Ecs I know are sportsmen/women, just slackers.

haha i always hear land ecs being called lazy etc. but seriously, what is their workload like (possibly in comparison to other courses)?

You would be better off asking someone who actually does Land Economy. Because most people on here will just slag it off (in the same way they do John's) because it's just sooooooo funny...

It's probably true that the *minimum* workload (that is, the amount you have to do to get away with it) is probably smaller in Land Economy than in many other subjects. Like *every* subject, however, just how much you actually do, and how much effort you put in, is entirely up to you. Can't just look at a Land Economer and assume they're a slacker.

The Varsity did an academic study of Cam students' views on the reputation of subjects both academically and vocationally, and they ranked Land Economy overall 24th out of 25 subjects; only marginally above ASNAC.

Yeah Oriental Studies was like 22nd in that - WTF?! Don't people realise learning one of the most complex languages in the world AND having to do essays on its culture/history/literature is rather tough!?

So is ASNaC ;yes;

Oh for goodness sake.
Can we just cut it with the subject slating? It really is *extremely* annoying.
Cambridge: The place where people can read random crap without idiots judging them for it.
Enough already.

LOL - but it's fun

And everyone at school says I'm applying for a 'doss degree' so I like to have a go at others

If people are coming up, they should be ready for it by seeing it on here I think!

Yes, it's definitely a case of reciprocity!!

My UCAS councllor (who wrote my reference!) went as far as saying SPS was a "waste of time" and "pointless" at degree level.

I've also had such comments like "shouldn't you be doing something useful?" and "why are you wasting your life  ?"

Just because it happens doesn't mean it has to continue doing so.

(HCD: I know, I was just being idealistic for a moment. But really, wouldn't it be nice. For a change. Pah. Anyway, I think I might just make it into my personal mission to get stroppy whenever anyone starts slagging things off...that will make me such a fun and interesting person to be around... :p:)
