Matriculation: question on sub-fusc for girls

Hi everyone,

Our matriculation date this year is Saturday 16th October. For men, it says that sub-fusc should be a dark suit (jacket, trousers, shirt), but for women it just says a shirt and trousers/skirt. But in all matriculation photos I've seen, the girls are wearing jackets too, or sometimes (and what seemed stranger), waistcoat type things! I bought a black suit yesterday incase I needed it for matriculation, and if not I'll need a suit for any job interviews anyway. What do the girls tend to do?

Thanks!

- Sam

IIRC, it is a shirt and trousers/skirt, but for both sexes, you also wear your gown on top of that, which is the waistcoat type thing.

OH. I thought the word "gown" meant a long flowing thing. But it's just a long waistcoat? How horrible! I've found photos now. How come the graduation gowns for other universities are the lovely long gown things, but we just get waistcoats?!

Do girls ever wear a jacket underneath the waistcoat? I don't think it looks nice to have white sleeves hanging out!

the girls gown is pretty lame. plus they wear those crappy ribbons

( to all the girls)

eh? it's the same commoner's gown..? & i didn't wear a jacket under mine, just blouse. + our ribbons have some room for individuality as to what you do with it! white ties has less..

the commoner's gowns are a bit of a silly length.

but, if you work hard, you may have the honour of spending £52.80 on an upgrade. plus depending on subject you may finish with a fancy ermine & silk lined, hooded little number!

The graduation gown for Oxford is different and quite long as well.
Hi Sam, didn't realise you were on here.

The Commoner's gown is a horrible, horrible thing; thank god I got to forget about it after the first year.

To go off topic a bit: guys, you've got to learn how to tie a bow tie, the fake, pre tied ones looks as tacky as hell.
Naaaah, they're fine.

Hey Chris! Yeah, I like that UK Learning has a separate Oxford forum (and sorry for posting the same message on here and on T2U!).

Oh, so these commoner's gowns won't be what we wear for graduation? That's ok then. And I don't think the ribbons look too bad. I do think it would look strange if I didn't wear a black jacket underneath the waistcoat though. I would have thought that if the uniform had to be different, the women would have had to wear a black jumper and not a black jacket or something, but to wear nothing at all in place of the men's jacket seems strange.
If you're interested there's a photograph of that newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky at her matriculation in this week's Radio Times. She's has a lovely early nineties curly perm adorning her gown and sub-fusc!

Please, they're positively vile, you can stop one a mile off.
Yup - and I spot enough of them around me that I feel I'm in good enough company wearing one

(Can you tell I'm state educated?)
I don't think it matters what type of education you had, I just think people should put the effort in. I mean, compared to the actually degree tieing a bow-tie isn't the hardest thing in the world; and it's not like we need to do it everyday. Saying that, there's nothing more cringeworthy that a poorly composed one, so the pre-tied version does have its advantages if you can't do them.
I know it doesn't, just a little nudge.

"compared to the actually degree tieing a bow-tie isn't the hardest thing in the world" - hey, you did PPE at Balliol. I do E&M at Lincoln - compared to tying a bow tie, my degree isn't the hardest thing in the world.

Shite, they don't test if you can tie a bow at the interview stage do they?

BazTheMoney - I looked at the silk, pre-tied bow ties in Castell & Son when I was in Oxford the other day. Nothing wrong with them at all, and I don't think I'd even be able to tell the difference between one of those and one you tie yourself. And besides, who would spend their matriculation day inspecting the bow ties of their friends and thus judging them by what they chose to buy? Or perhaps even worse, what they could afford to buy. Seems you're a little stuck up on the matter.
