Does any1 know the average year scales in reaching from graduate to consultant or band 9 physio? or is it entiirely upto how hard you work?
varies from trust to trust as some have mroe rotations than others, plus given th job situation that may also impact on the time you spend in certain jobs. I know that ju nior rotations should take about 2 years, (so thats the progression from band 5 to band 6) but some people are having to be juniors for longer as they're having trouble getting senior 1 (band 6 posts)..........however, some people know exact what area they want to work in right from te beginning and this will make your progression quicker...there was an article in frontline a few months ago abut a guy who went from band 5 to band 7 in 18 months (so thats two payscales)......so I would say its not dependent on how hard you work, more about what the job availability is like, whether you want to progress that far and also about how soon you know what you want to specialise in if anything

yup Jackie is right, it used to be: Junior for 2yrs, Senior II from 2yrs post-grad to 5yrs...then Senior I (band 6 or 7 depending on where you are in the UK!) at 5yrs post grad....then after that band 8 jobs (clinical specialists, superintendents etc...) probably 10yrs post-grad....but of course the situation has changed somewhat now:s-smilie:

I know the respiratory service is changing in scotland (I think also in England??) so if you want to specialise in this you can do so from a junior level and work your way up through a training programme much quicker...giving the resp physio's more clinical skills and more importance in that field. It's being brought into my trust this year I think and I think we are the first up here so don't know much about it yet....just means the current rotation system will not include respiratory physio as that will be left to the resp service:smile: I'm keen to specialise in this area I think so am looking forward to it!

Rotations good thanks! 2 more months to go then its off to elective orthopaedics for 4 months... yawn!! ah well it's all experience as they say! Still getting the hang of mental health, so many classes I forget what goes in which class!! It's a nice area to work in though, quite laid back and not too stressful!

How are you getting on? How's the dissertation coming?

Just to cheer you up and give you some hope- Jobs update- 12 out of 19 of my class mates have jobs now (from graduating in November), most are temporary contracts but a few others have permanent too. Oh and I got offered 7 interviews since I accepted this job! I didn't go to any of them as I'm happy with my current job! 5 were from stuff I applied for back in October and November and 2 from sending CV's in....so it's really not as bad as you'd think! Employers also seem to keep the forms after the closing dates so it's worth applying for stuff before you graduate too...

Yeah I'm good - I'm on a community neuro placement at the mo. Its weird as I always thought Community was going to be my thing....but you know what, its not! Its a good placement and the staff are fab, but its just not me, know what I mean?! I really REALLY miss the hustle and bustle of wards and outpatients. I really think thats where I'm going to want to end up. Just something about community that doesn't really do it for me.

Dissertation has been kinda forgotten about with everything else going on, but getting back into it slowly lol!

Thats good news about the jobs. I plan to start applying over easter so fingers crossed something may come up before....still an interview would be betetr than nothin lol

Yep totally understand about that, I really prefer the hospital side of it too, actually the sicker the better (I'm strange I know!!), something to do with having to really problem solve and analyse tons of monitors etc...I loved ITU and HDU...so yeah I understand where you are coming from about the community stuff, I don't find it as exciting as the acute side of it:p:

glad to know I'm not the only one....I don't think I'll be picking a trust with community rotations lol

I'm currently in the middle of trying to find a journal on either neuro and community (or both!) for a journal club I have to give next week (the joy of being level 3!) and I'm struggling! Need to have found it by tomorrow! Found one that looks ok but its 3 years old so I'm sure if its too old! Didn't really gwet much guidance on it juts got told "find a journal on neuro and or community" - great help that was lol

Yep I actually applied for a rotational post which is just community...thankfully I got this job so didn't bother going to the interview!:p:

lol! The whole "not being able to apply yet" thing is really annoying - got an email today about a rotational band 5 post at a hosp in London which sounds perfect for me, but they want someone who can start in March, so its just that little bit too early for me to be able to apply for it! So frustrating, jobs in London are so hard to come by and its annoying not being able to apply!

No, no apply, apply!! I applied for stuff way before I'd finished on the off chance....and I got a couple of calls about other jobs that came up after the closing date- they must have kept my application form. You never know, and it's good practice!

If you want any application form advice let me know! I managed to get interviews for nearly everything I applied for so must have been doing something right!

don't you think its just a little too soon? Esp as they wanty someone to start in March - surely I'll just be rejected straight off? I won't have HPC clearance till Augist at the earliest...

hmm, yes in that case maybe it is too soon....but I would start applying from April onwards anyway. Did you know you can fill in your HPC forms and send them in before you graduate? If you get them in before then as soon as the pass list is sent to HPC they will register you straight away- mine took 2 days to do as I'd sent the forms in about a month before. Oh and a friend sent her CV into all the London hospitals but they sent snotty letters back saying " they don't accept CV's" !! But slightly out of town might be a bit more receptive!

I had planned to apply from april - am going to write my personal spec over the easter hosl (along with the millions of other things I have to do) and will msotly likely be taking yu up on your offer of help lol!

No, I didn't know that abotu the HPC, but now you've told me I'll be doing that to!

Yeah London hosps seem to have rules of their own, but I'm only going to be applying to London Hosps anyway I think

no Nurse or AHP should assume they are going to get beyond band 6

as the numbers of posts tail off quite dramtically at band 7 and markedly at band 8 - also even as a consultant you may not reach band 9 ... band 9 is for people who in smaller trusts would be on the director pay scales but because of the size ofthe organisatio nthey work for aren't Directors, how hard you work does have an impact as if you don't undertake further study and development you won't even reach the top increment of band 5 / get a promotion to band 6

as for the CV point thanks to a "is it 'cos i is black" medical student or 3 the NHS can't accept CVs anymore it all has to be on the application forms which can be seperated to remove personal details when sent for shortlisting - appointing managers don't actually find out who they have shortlisted until they get the interview times ...
