Why is University called University?
Why is University called University? Why is it? I mean, where did the word University come from and why are institutes of higher education called 'University'? Also, why is a degree called a degree? Anyone know?

University comes from the latin word universitas. It means a whole, a corporate body
Degree is just a word that has been used for a long time to indicate level in society. Such as 'Lord or lady of high degree'.
