Alkenes have carbon carbon double bonds they are unsaturated hydrocarbons and are used to make polymers whilst Alkanes have single bonds so are therefore saturated and are commonly used as fuels.

Saturated just refers to a compound with single bonds as found in the Alkanes. Unsaturated compounds have double bonds such as the carbon carbon double bonds found in Alkenes.

Alkenes are much more reactive, hence why they can be used to make plastics etc in polymerisation
