Can anyone please outline and explain THE DIFFERENCE between content and thematic analysis. Are they the same or is there really a difference?

Content Analysis is a way to summarise large masses of quantitative data whereas thematic analysis is a way to summarise large masses of qualitative data.

Thematic analysis works by identifying themes in the data. For example, looking at a researcher can read an article and write a summary based on the interwoven themes.

Content analysis works by coding different categories and counting the number of occurences in a large set of data. For example you may want to study gender representation in the media by looking at all sport articles in one year and counting how many stories were about women and how many about men.

Hope this helps
