acne isn't caused my dirty skin and you probably shouldn't use 'hand' wash on irritated skin.

I'm taking roaccutane at the moment and have had fairly good results after just over 3 months though my skin isn't completely clear yet. The side effects I've had are dry skin / lips and feeling lethargic. Mood changes I've had were present before I started and are caused by my skin, not the roaccutane. Overall I'm pleased with how it's working and wish I hadn't had to go through 3 courses of antibiotics + benzoyl peroxide as well as various vitamins/supplements, washes and routines to get on it.

Whatever you do, don't do this!! That is probably the worst thing you could put on your face. It's alcohol based so would dry your face out something awful. Plus you aren't supposed to use it on broken skin either which is what happens when spots are burst or become scabby.

I think everyone should start calling it "ance", it's by far the cooler word.

As opposed to all other treatments which..... oh yeah, dry out your skin!!

Before you get to the roaccutane stage then alternative things which might work are; drink and/or apply a solution of cyder vinegar to the affected area, believe it or not it really does work for mild/moderate acne. Zinc tablets are a common remedy also.

My friend was on roaccutane. It worked miracles on her skin (which was awful before she had it and is now pretty much perfect), but the side effects can be very serious. She has been told that she is almost certainly infertile as a result (luckily she didn't want kids lol), but some of the other side effects were even worse - liver damage etc. I really wouldn't recommend this unless you're deperate. I know the chances of side effects are ow with any medication, but roaccutane seems to have a bit of a rep! Just make sure you do your research.

Roaccutane worked wonders for me.

Have you already been to your doctors though? There's a lot of other things to try first, and it's not a nice drug to be on.

Hey, I have no experience with roaccutane but I do have experience with acne...
First I was prescribed a zinc solution to put on my skin. It worked quite well initially but after about a year it seemed to stop working. Then my doctor put me on dianette (a type of contraceptive pill used to treat acne), which, after a few months worked really well and it made my periods a lot less painful too. I remember being told I wasn't meant to take it for longer than two years though because it could possibly cause some trouble with your liver, but it never caused me any side effects.

Hey, mee too, both things! I had to put a zinc solution every night before going to bed and it worked for some time but then it stopped working... and I've been taking this 21-day pill that regulates my period and it works, I am getting so much better. I was told that my acne problem was due to an irregularity of my ovaries, so know that the root problem is being fixed, I look much better than before!

I find it hard to believe that it caused infertility unless she abused it, it's definately not one of the stated side-effects, and if there was any risk whatsoever they'd have to state it as one by law.

Ive found drinking tons of water (at least 2l a day), eating mroe fruit and exercising has started to help clear up my skin. I still have the odd severe outbreak due to periods and stress but overall its generally very good. Witch foaming face wash or exfoliating fash wash have worked well for me and Quinoderm Creme was pretty good but it dried out my skin something scary, I looked like an extra from XFiles!
Speak to your doctor about alternative to Roaccutane because Iv heard nothing but horror stories from friends who have been on it.

i would be cautious about going straight on roaccutane before trying anything else. there are so many terrible stories, and it also makes your skin really dry, so whilst getting rid of spots is not that great for your skin

i use this solution you put on your skin called zineryt, and it is really, i still get the occasional spot but my skin is clear. however i tried this other solution before that which didn't work, so you should try more than one if your acne isn't too serious.

also i would recommend not using exfoliating facial scrubs too much as they irritate the skin, and just use a very gentle cleanser, you don't need to kill your skin, just keep it clean, i know it is tempting to over-cleanse.

I'd like to post in support of roaccutane after seeing a few of the repies.

I agree with others in the sense that you should definitely try other things first (healthy living (though acne is not caused by 'bad' living), antibiotics, different cleansers, benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids, vitamins and supplements and moisturisers for oily skin) but sometimes when everything else fails roaccutane is the only thing that works. I agree for mild to moderate acne roaccutane probably isn't worth it but when the situation becomes so bad that someone is almost afraid to leave their house then roaccutane is the only real solution.

I was afraid to go on it because of everything I'd read on the media and the internet but you have to realise the success stories simply don't circulate as well. People with bad experiences are more likely to talk about it and roaccutane success stories aren't quite as newsworthy as apparent roaccutane suicides. There are millions of success stories which go unreported.

Exactly. Of course something as serious as suicide will be published over the internet or whatever, but this is worldwide, and if you compare it with the total of number of people who took accutane without bad experience, you'll find suicide events account for a very very small percentage. If you have a good experience, you're likely not to care about publishing your results, since, the drug safely did what it was meant to do. If the number of bad experiences were really high, then the drug wouldn't exist in the market.

Hey,
I'm on something called Isotane which is the new & improved roaccutane. It seems to be working pretty well but beware the dermatologists aren't always clear about the side effects so make sure you check it out
Also stock up on a lot of lip balm because your lips will feel like sand paper.
Hope all goes well

Isotane is just the name they give to roaccutane in NZ.
