Did I mess up my LNAT?

I wrote just over 1000 words for the essay section. Apparently (I was told today), the limit is 700. What uni is going to let me in when I'm clearly incapable of following simple instructions?

Have I messed it up properly, or do you think they might overlook it?

I know that some unis don't really value it - some people say they don't even read the essays. I think that's probably a bit farfetched but I don't think it carries that much weight. If you're lucky you'll have done really well on the multiple choice bit and be a strong candidate in other areas and it won't matter too much. Obviously it won't work in your favour but I doubt it will be too much of a problem. I don't think they're monsters - they won't take one look and chuck you in the 'moron' pile if you'd have a chance. If they're choosing between two candidates and they bring out the essay to help them decide I imagine they'll be more concerned with the quality of the essay than whether you followed the instructions.

Part of the "quality" of an essay is how concisely you make your points. If I were an admissions tutor I would be concerned by someone taking neary 50% extra.

They might just read the first 700 and allow the rest :dontknow:

My conclusion carried a lot of weight, that would suck :frown: !

I don't see why they'd spend time and resources making people sit it if it's not that valued. :/

Yeah I know that's why I'm worried. I looked at the practice paper and it states explicitly that 'in no event must you go over 750 words'. I just hope they read it all and like what I've written, I thought it was a pretty good argument, hopefully they'll just knock some marks off for it being over.

:frown:

oops.

How did you even manage 1000 words?!

After thinkin gand planning for 2 secs, i typed at superfast speed, i was halfway through re-reading it all and it all closed :frown:

You must be superhuman:p:

..But yeh, don't worry about the essay, the uni's main concern is the multiple choice. I think they only look at your essay if your multiple choice isn't particularly good.

1000 words isn't a lot :|......I don't know though I'm pretty good at essay writing, it just seems to flow. Just not so good at reading instructions apparently. It was a good topic I was writing on, I even had statistics etc to back up what I was saying. I could have written more, I had a little time to spare, but I didn't want to start waffling.

I do hope you're right though. I'm not overly confident about some of the multiple choice, I was kinda relying on my essay as I thought it was good. I'm not really bothered about it anymore, it'll be gutting if I lose out on my first choice because of it, but hopefully it'll teach me a lesson for the future (although probably not lol).

Nevermind.

Isn't the LNAT still ongoing? If so, you shouldn't really be posting essay titles.

Reply 12

I'll edit that if that's the case.

Yeah that's why I didn't post mine.

How did you find yours generally?

When do we get the results by the way?

essay was easy, I managed to type 600 words in next to no time so I was caught by surprise and ended it quite quickly, I used mostly humour and only argued for one side, had a line "on the other hand" and then continued to argue against the title. Was alright, was the strongest bit of my LNAT I think.

Was it a title that provoked you to take a stand on one side? I don't know even with them I tend to put a balanced argument (but perhaps favour one side by refuting the points I make for the side I don't agree with), but personal opinion and evaluation I tend to put in the conclusion.

Sounds like you've done fine though, if you're confident. I never leave exams very confident really, always think I've messed up somehow. Ironic that I thought this one went okay haha

A good essay shows both sides then reaches a supported conclusion :p:

Not in Law as you're supposed to argue one side, you don't go into a court room and argue both sides do you
