BBC News's top headline is the Alabama senate election result, so are all the major newspapers and Sky news. But how does it affect us in Britain? It has no real relevance and I doubt most British people actually care about a small election within a pretty irrelevant US state.

It wasn't a 'small election'. It was an election to the US Senate which has reduced the Republican majority from 52-48 to 51-49, making it harder for them to pass controversial legislation. In addition, it makes it more likely that the Democrats will take control of the Senate in the 2018 elections.
As for the wider point, Trump backed the Republican candidate strongly. The fact that the Democrats won in one of the strongest Republican states, is really quite remarkable.

It's a shocking election in several ways - a Trump-supported child-molesting religious fundamentalist Republican being beaten by a Democrat in one of the most staunchly Republican states in the country. Lots of buzzwords and excitement!

Exactly. You'd never foxnews reporting on the Richmond Park by-election lol

Almost every country's media will report more on America, than America's media will report on them.
America is still the biggest global influence and what happens there has more of a global impact than just about anywhere else.

Roy Moore is symbolic of the fault line in American politics and society (bigots vs decent people). His defeat weakens Trump, so it is a big news story.
It is also a quiet news day. What story would you prefer they lead with? The latest speculation of Conservative Brexit squabbling?

Why can't they report on Brexit or something else that actually directly affects us as British people?

1. It is a major story in the US, which is our greatest ally and individual trading partner.
2. It's about Trump and how he is affected as the most powerful man in the world.
3. His policies affect everyone including the UK.
Yes it affects us in Britain.
