How can I overcome anxiety?

In some lessons at school or at home I become really anxious and unsettled, especially if the teacher is in a temper or the class is playing up. It gets to the point where I can't concentrate on work and have to keep looking around at what people are saying and whether its related to the school topic.

At home I don't like talking to my parents, because I feel like I'm distracting them from something or they won't understand me and act as if I'm being selfish.

I'm certain this isn't normal behaviour for a teenager. How can I stop being so anxious and worrying how my teachers and parents are feeling?

Thanks in advance.

There is no normal behaviour for a teenager, this might help a little, I dunno. http://www.crosswalk.com/spirituallife/women/11563116/

To me it sounds like you might have a little social anxiety but most people have this to an extent.

I used to get that all the time, try to focus on your breathing (sounds cheesy but
it really works!) You could also try wearing a beaded bracelet and when you start
feeling anxious count the beads until you feel calmer

This is exactly like me, its social anxiety... I end up reading through notes/work after the class, I reckon i've been like this since I was about 13... its a real *****er for trying to actually get anything done... >_<... I think mine came from being constantly criticised/bullyied in lessons until I couldn't actually focus on work without worrying what anyone was going to do to me... :frown: Hopefully seeing someone about it all soon, I want to get it sorted before Uni etc... It does suck though, you should go to your GP if it continues...

eugh.. Thats not much help, hard to focus on your breathing when you want to run out of class because you feel like your gonna scream... :frown: heh...

I know your just trying to help, all id say is just make sure you read through anything you didn't understand/couldn't concentrate on in class...

counselling. I've had it twice for anxiety and I like to think that now I'm pretty normal at least when it comes to that. It's really good because the counsellor will ask questions and make suggestions as to why you react like this that you may never have thought of. once you know the cause it's a lot easier to help stop the symptoms.

As above, councelling is a good idea. Also, try and embark on new things, eg: learning to drive. It'll take a while, but you should see some results if you work hard at changing your attitude.

Good Luck!

Several years ago I suffered from quite bad anxiety attacks, and on occasions now I can still work myself into them if I am not careful.

How to I stop myself from the attacks? When I start getting worked up about something I start to end every sentence in '...but I will still be alive'. And it is true, in most cases it begins as something small and it just gets built up until you put it in context.

'Yes, the class may be becoming pains and the teacher is starting to look slightly annoyed and there is no sign of change and the teacher is becoming more annoyed and I can tell she is going to shout at any minute and it is going to be really loud and it will be uncomfortable ... but after that momentary discomfort I will still be alive ... in fact all she is going to do is make a loud sound for a little while (hopefully audible) then life shall continue as normal.'

i have the same thing, its horrible. all my teachers think im really shy, but its just avoiding being spoken to as my brain is all fuzzy. its especially horrible in group work where you have a bossy leader and are expected to input suggestions, i just cant do it and say nothing and everyone has a go cos they think im lazy but i would love to say stuff and input but i cant as i panic too much.

I don't have anxiety problems but i often dont tell my parents/teachers/friends the full story about why im upset or whats going on in my life as i don't want to burden them with my problems.. which in turn they get annoyed about because they say we burden you with ours and we just want to help. as Yellow Daisy said if your anxiety problem is affecting your work then see a councilor they can really help even if its just to let all your worries and insecurities out.

Thanks for the advice everyone, but I don't think I can do counselling because my parents won't let me (they don't know about my anxiety and it would be too expensive anyway).

phone up a helpline maybe - usually they are standard rate... at least you willbe able to talk to someone about it

Talk to the school nurse, they are trained to give advice etc.

Breathing! Take a deep breath first then slowly in and out, concentrate on it. Try to keep your mind occupied with something.

I get anxiety all the time, used to have panic attacks and the key is breathing and keeping your mind of the anxiety. For example when driving count number plates or look at things count the number of cars and colours.

If Noel Edmonds can't help someone sort their life out, I don't know who can.
