staff nurse selection board: 10min presentation - topic??

hi, i have to give a 10 minute presentation at raf cranwell as part of my specialist interview for the trade of student staff nurse, in front of the selection panel and other candidates.

i planned to do it about my gold duke of edinburgh award as it could be a topic of your choice (they say you probably shouldn't do it on a medical/raf/nursing topic as the panel are raf nurses so you 'd be caught out easily), and they advise that you do it on something that is familiar to you. plus i thought it'd look quite good.

but today i got my invite to the interview and it said that the topic of the presentation should be "one that will generate discussion amongst candidates."

what does this mean do you think? to me this suggests that it needs to be a subject that you can debate and chat about, like a current affair issue?

i'm really confused now so what do you think i should do it on??

I once did a talk on "What would you be prepared to die for?"; that generated quite a lot of discussion.

so does everyone reckon it needs to be on a topical issue rather than a hobbie??
To generate discussion among candidates you have to have a subject they can all identify with or know something about. Giving a presentation about your hobby of making models of motor cars from old bottle tops may not do that.

the problem is picking a topic that "you are familiar with" and will "generate discussion," if you see where i'm coming from.

so you wouldn't advise doing it on my gold duke of edinburgh's award then?
If you are trying to become a staff nurse you, presumably, are familiar with and knowledgeabale about the arguments regarding hygiene in hospitals. There is a genuine argument to be had about whether it is worth the money. What will you discuss about the DoE? Whether the campsite was adequately protected from animals?

I would imagine it would be an area of intrest that's specific to you but gives everyone 'food for thought'. Some presentaions can come across as if your being preached to - not so good. You need to pick a topic that you know well so if there's any questions at the end you'll be able to answer them no problem. Have you tried egoat to see if there's any raf nurses on there that can give you a better idea?

ok, ok, but that topic you suggested is nursing related... and i don't want to be caught out on it.

im also worried about it being boring, lol.

have you done many presentations before? do you have anyone you can practice it on? your local library should have books on giving presentations.

whats egoat?

well yeah practising it shouldn't be a problem and i did some presentations at school as well as teaching in cadets and i also was on public speaking team so am as worried about speaking confidently its just the topic choice?!
Have confidence. If you are capable of doing the job you are applying for that topic should be a piece of cake - you need to show confidence and capaility in nursing.

hey loopy loo,

i cant give too much advice really as i am going for staff nurse not student nurse therefore the topic i have selected is clinical!!

i realise that your letter says you need to be able generate discussion with other candidates, but you are giving a presentation. not so much having a debate. they just mean that the panel will perhaps be able to generate questions about it. (thats what i think anyway. ive not been yet!)

how about discussing Hospital Aquired Infections (HIA'S) ? I realise that it is a clinical topic, but its not a clinical topic that is difficult for a non-clinical individual to discuss!

Infact - if you find reputable articals/journals etc and use references within your presentation you will look like you are well on your way to being able to cope with the workload of a student nurse.

PM me!! x
actually, how about the topic of organ donations and presumed consent??

in the news at the moment, and clinicaly

thanks everyone. been talking to sum ppl and i get the impression that the topic content is mainly irrelevant and they just want to see that you can research, prepare and organise material and give a confident presentation.

i don't want to risk doing anything clinical or nursing related because i could be caught out easily.

thanks everyone, great stuff.

oh and i'm gonna cheak out that website!

I was going to suggest what everyone has already sggested.... MRSA, nurses pay, hospital cleanliness etc. All towards yours and the audiences area of knowledge but still easily discussable with the panel. Good luck!
