King's College Maths School

Hi all,

I have applied to KCLMS and am awaiting my interview in a few weeks... However, I am still not completely sure if I want to go there. I have a few questions:

1) Is the area surrounding the school safe and is walking to station safe late in the evenings?
2) How are people generally within the school (is it very competitive)?
3) How do you think the school compares to non-specialised secondary schools which do well in similar subject areas?
4) In your opinion, how is the physics department?

Thank you so much

I have an interview too and I'm scared because my mum just showed me a link of some guy getting stabbed near the area.
I think I'd rather go to a private school which I have offers for than go to the middle of a council estate.. I hope I don't sound rude
What other schools have you applied to?

Hi,

Thanks for responding. I have received an offer from another private school, which is not specialised. The area is my main concern... otherwise the school seems to be amazing.

What school have you received offers for?
I will go to the interview for preparation on maths interviews but I've already paid the entrance fee to King's

1) There is a large police station not far down the road.
2) The students are normal people, who also like maths.
3) In maths and physics, KCLMS is head and shoulders above non-specialised sixth forms.
4) Good. Good teaching, and lots of practicals.
My daughter attended KCLMS. We chose it instead of a private school, even before they had their 1st set of A-Level results and their awesome Oxbridge and value added stats.

1) You can walk to the station with friends (or even teachers) if you’re nervous, but it’s a busy area in the evenings. It’s not on a rough council estate - I’d guess many of those flats are privately owned. It’s also opposite the Imperial War Museum which is lovely.
2) Students are supportive and help each other out.
3) Small class sizes. KCLMS offers professional development training to maths teachers from other schools.
4) My daughter found A-Level Physics very interesting but very hard. She still managed a high A at A-Level. The Physics dept support their students really well. All departments run extra lunch time and after school classes for those who need extra help.

Hope that helps!

I'm a current student in year 12 doing my AS economics exam tomorrow.
1. I used to live 45 minutes away from school and took the tube. The area is generally safe.
2. The school is very competitive amongst students in results, but there are still chilled times.
3. This school is much better than my secondary (Holland Park School) regarding the subjects they teach. Teachers are incredible.
4. The physics department is generally good.

Doing maths challenge papers is also good practise. But also any problem solving practise is great.

I know they say they test you on KS3 knowledge would you say its fairly easy?

The knowledge required is generally easy however figuring out the question is what’s difficult:yep:
It’s very similar to the sample paper though:wink:

Definitely not.
It's like how in Maths Challenges, you know all the content, but trying to apply it can be a lot more difficult.
In my year barely anyone actually managed to complete the paper as far as I'm aware.

Would you recommend doing the maths challenge papers?

I also heard someone got in without doing the test as they had a reference, do any of you know anything about that?

After going over the sample paper and the makscheme in depth, sure.

.

I don't know for sure but I think someone in my year got in without the test because they had already done A Level Maths.

Unless it's a very special circumstance I would say it's quite unlikely#

agree with @iwishicouldfly14 that it's very unlikely; don't think there's anyone in my year who didn't take the test as far as i'm aware:wink: you'd mmost likely have to have an exceptional reason why (especially as the test is mentioned in the admissions policy as a deciding thingamajig)
