A nerve (such as the sciatic nerve) is analogous to a cable, which contains many fibres or neurones. A nerve is ensheathed in connective tissue known as the epineurium, which surrounds thousands of neurones. These neurones can be sensory (afferent) neurones or motor (efferent) neurones, but not interneurones. Interneurones are found in the CNS and therefore are not found within peripheral nerves.
