Covered smoke detector caught during inspection

Hi guys, need a little help/advice.

I'm in private halls, not university ones but still student halls and they did a random inspection (which they told me they wouldn't do and they would let us know when) and saw that I had covered my smoke detector.

I have depression and light incense when I can't sleep as it calms me down but the fire alarm always goes off so I assume they are sensitive and covered it, due to it being around 4am I didn't want it going off. I've been home for a few days and so forgot to take it down before leaving but the inspector said (to my housemate) that it is illegal and they clamp down hard on this kind of thing.

I am just wondering if anyone has been in the same position and if so what happened ???

You better explain to them and hope they are lenient, also I would speak to someone at uni about your problems with them.

You really should remove the tape (or whatever else you are covering it with) from the smoke detector when you are finished with filling your room with incense as you will never know when a fire may develop in your room.

It’s illegal for them to enter without 24 hours notice. If they try and get you in trouble, remember they broke the law

What was the scent… bit of that 420 eh eh
Nah jks 🤣

You get scolded and a warning if memory serves, depends on the hall owner and their policy though, if you keep doing it they might kick you out though as its considered a fire hazard

Covering smoke detectors is illegal and dangerous. Remove the cover immediately. Many accommodations now use advanced systems like the Forensics Detectors Vape Detector, which are more precise in detecting various aerosols. Speak with management about:

1.

Adjusting detector sensitivity

2.

Safer relaxation alternatives

3.

Mental health resources

Consider using essential oil diffusers or LED candles instead. Reach out to university counseling for depression support. Be honest with management - they may help find safe solutions that don't compromise fire safety. Remember, these rules exist to protect everyone.

Sound advice but the thread is 6yrs old.
