Reference for mature student applying for fine art degree course at ARU

Hi, I am a person who has been working some time. I want to apply for a fine art degree course, but I don't want to ask my employer to be my referee. It is some time since I did my foundation course. Would it be OK to ask an artistic friend to provide the reference?

The UCAS guidance states

We ask applicants to make sure they have the agreement of their chosen referees before they enter their details. We also ask them not to choose family members, friends, partners or ex-partners as referees. If this describes your relationship with the applicant, please don't agree to be a referee.
This would indicate friends are unsuitable. They need to eb a professional and someone capable of a degree of independence and objectivity.
