Tiptronic/Easytronic

Hi...I just passed my test today and I'm already searching for a car lol!! I originally wanted a tiptronic gearbox...you know the that switches between manual and automatic without clutch control. I was wondering is Easytronic the same thing because people are really confusing me saying it's a manual, then saying it's a automatic.

Thanks for the help xx:biggrin:

it is a semi automatic.

They are also very expensive and usually on higher end models which will be difficult to get insurance for being that you have just passed your test.

Depends how deep your pockets are...

I've seen a few 02 corsa's for around £2500, which is how much I'm looking to spend on the car. I'm just a bit worried about the insurance to be honest

Well, done some research on it, and there are mixed reviews of the easytronic system.

Here are some links for your perusal if you wish

This was after a simple google search, food for thought...why do you not want a manual?

Some of the comments on those forums has put me off a bit...I learnt in a manual and unlike some others I can't wait to see the back of all that clutch control. My dad drives a tiptronic and whenever I drive his car I just love it. It's great being able to have control over the gears without all the clutch control. My sister drives an auto, don't get me wrong I don't mind them but I love the idea of having the choice of "What do I feel like today manual or auto???" lol.

Thanks for the help though x

Well don't let that put you off, i always feel you are better off knowing what you are getting yourself into! Especially when you are paying £2500

I think you need to test drive one, but i don't know what your Dad's car is...but obvioulsy a automatic in a Corsa is going to be very different to one in a high end car.

what is the point, really. just get a manual and save yourself the bother.

same thing really.. I've only driven two tiptronic cars, a Corsa 'easytronic' and my uncles Bentley, but I can safely say the auto on the Corsa is pants! the easytronic was good enough, but I wouldnt bother with the extra expense..

Buy an Audi A3 with a DSG gear box.. can get an A3 for £7000 ish
Get a yellow one ^^
The revolutionary direct shift gearbox (DSG) combines the advantages of a conventional six-speed manual-shift gearbox with the qualities possessed by a modern automatic transmission. The driver enjoys immense agility and driving pleasure with, at the same time, smooth, dynamic acceleration with no interruption to the power flow.

Should be fine, never driven a car one, but the stuff I drive has what we call powershift, what you would call tiptronic, and have had for about 15 years at much much higher loads and stresses than you could ever get in car. They fail very rarely.

When will cars have CVT I wonder? That will almost certainly be the next thing, its basically an auto box with no gears, sounds a bit like that DSG above, but not quite. You can always have the optimum power available no matter what speed your going, and you can match the speed to any revs, ie you could be doing 30mph at 4000 revs, or 30mph at 1000 revs, or any possible engine speed infact. Will make for very fuel efficient driving once its common place.

BMW used a belt-drive CVT as an option for the low and middle range MINI in 2001. But the Cooper S did not due to the increased torque levels, so they used an auto box for that instead.

The 2007 Dodge Caliber and the related Jeep Compass employ a CVT as there auto transmission.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer model is available with CVT transmission as the automatic transmission.

But imo car manufatruers may latch onto this in the future.. for now DSG rules.. and other manufacturers would rather use there own technlogy:
