Needlephobia

I'm having two teeth out tommorrow, which will of course require injections. I'm **** scared of them anyways - but in the gums. I'm actually going to soil the dentist chair.
Anyone know some good ways to deal with needlephobia?

Face it. I have to have my blood taken every other week for tests because i had DVT last year. I had needles stuck in me everywhere. Seriously, ill never be scared of them again. Just breathe, relax, its only a small prick, but its particularly bad in the gums, even i dont like that. But no one likes the dentist anyway, so dont worry.

when having an injection in your mouth its not actually that bad, i had to have 2 of my wisdom teeth taken out and have injections.

if you talk to your dentist and explain you have a needle phobia they may be able to brig up the needle so you can't see it. you don't feel the needle going in like you would if it were in your arm.

other ways to deal with it are to look up into your head, or alternatively close your eyes, when the injection is happening it feels like the dentist is tickling the inside of your mouth with one of those pointy scraper tool things they have.

there is no real way of overcoming your fear but don't look, let the dentist know, sit back, relax and think of something that'll take you mind off it.

the last resort is sare into the light for a couple of seconds it'll hurt your eyes and you'll get the spots in your vision and won't notice the injection happening.

its a weird feeling, having your gums injected, but its really not that bad. i know thats hypocritical from someone who doesnt give a rats arse about needles but its definitely not your conventional injection

good luck!

well yea, trying to blind yourself from whats happening is always an option .

Thanks everyone
I'll tell you how that blinding idea works out.

(if I'm not wallowing in the post-extraction ache)

There are ceramic needles which take the pain/sting away from the traditional needle, these may help you get over your phobia, just dont expect it to be on the NHS!

I used to have a severe fear of blood/needles when I was young, went to see counsellor who brought in a tray with loads of blood stained needles on it into the room and then lay down on table so i could see it, I freaked out kicked the tray across the room in fear/anger. The counseller then left me in the room and locked me in, till I calmed down. Eventually I started to chill out and realised that the needless weren't going to do me any harm (the red blood on them was actually paint of some description), I picked them up to have a look.... what do you know my fear had totally subsided.

... as it happens, I'm now a psychology student and I know that they subjected me to the behavioural form of treatment called Flooding.. ie maxium exposure to persons most feared situation until fear subsides.

I have personal experinece to show that this can actually work.

I'm acrually a needlephobic diabetic... crazy I know. Injecting insulin doesnt bother me...the needles are absolutely tine plus im entirely in control.
But I've refused to have my blood taken for 5 years.
Now they've told me to get counselling so if it works, I'll let ya know.
Hope it does....
and good luck
Let us know how ir goes!

I'm hopeless with needles - I've got to have a wisdom tooth out soon and I'm totally putting it off :s-smilie: But I've had fillings at the dentist before and the needle really isn't that bad! Feel like an idiot, knowing that I've had the needles before and know they don't hur but still being scared of them :s-smilie:

Shut your eyes and try and imagine you're somewhere else. It helps if you have a supportive dentist - tell them how you feel and they should take extra care with you.

I'm a needlephobic too and I find that injections in the gums actually hurt a lot less than injections into other areas of the body. Hold that thought.

im the same and agree that its not that the needle hurts in anyway its just the fact the putting it in me it scares the cr*p out of me to the extent that i just pass out...u could always try that!

i used to have a mega fear of needles.
so bad to say when i was 10 and i was made to have the menigistis injection i was pinned to the bed by various nurses and i kicked out and broke on of thier noses because i was so terrified.
also i had a pack of tranquilizers given to me by my doctor a few years ago in case i needed an injection
however after needing a piece of my tooth drilled away and a new part of my tooth made for cosmetic reasons i got over my fear of needles. The dentist needles in your gum are not bad. They look huge which might freak you out so close ur eyes but u hardly feel a thing (and this is coming from the person with the lowest pain threshold in the world)
anyway hopefully u should get over your fear
i hope so because when you become an adult its injections all the time if your a woman lol :frown:

I used to scream like you wouldnt believe back as a kid when I needed injections of some description. The turning point was just me making the concious decision to rationalise my fear. I figured "well it kinda needs to be done and really I dont have that much of a choice so just get on with it". Now look where I am... on the path to make a career using the damn things!

to the OP specifically when I have needed anasthesia at the dentists I can say the needles were pretty big, but werent actually that bad. I recommend that you (as has been said before) just close your eyes and let them get on with it (it will benifit you in the long term)

God dammit this is hurting now. The procedure was fine, and they decided to take out only one. I never even saw the needles, and it wasn't so bad once it pierced the surface.

Aww... the pain will go away but well done
You've faced it and now it's over with

Grab hold of the dentists nuts and say "If you hurt me, I'll hurt you!" That usually ensures he is very careful about making you comfortable as possible.

Shut your eyes and relax. Trust me, they're not that bad at all! It'll be over really quickly if you try not to think about it.

yeah, productive advice. No pain no gain with regards to dentistry. some procedures to hurt, but you'll be in a lot more pain if you dont have the procedure.

(son of a dentist talking....daddy has emoved 7 of my teeth and counting...!)
