Yes you can. Any place that sells contact lenses: Boots, Vision Express, and www.contactlenses.co.uk.

I've never had contact lenses before. My eyesight is 20/30 in both eyes. I don't use my glasses that often. Should I bother with contacts?

Reply 3

It might take a few weeks to get used to, but it's better to have them in my opinion, or your eyesight will worsen over time.

Reply 4

That doesn't make any sense at all. How could wearing lenses HELP my eyesight in the long run? I would just become more dependant on them.

Reply 5

Wearing contact lenses or glasses will slow down the speed at which your eyesight gets worse. I'm not sure how bad your eyesight is, but I know that if you are short-sighted and need to wear them, then it's best to wear them most of the time so that your eyes are not constantly being strained. However, you have said that you don't use your glasses that often. Is this because you don't need to? Oh and I don't think your eyes become dependant on correctives lenses/ glasses.

The distance between your eye and the glasses is greater than the distance between your eye and the contact lens. Theoretically this means your eye doesn't have to work as hard before it gets to the lens, so it reduces damage over the long term.

That is if you don't get any of the myriad problems associated with contact lenses :p:

As above really - I wish I could wear them for those reasons. However, small eyes + strong blink = not exactly conducive to contact lens wear...

Reply 8

contact lenses are great - less hassle if you're really short sighted (like i am!).

Its definitely not worth straining your eyes, if you need to wear glasses/contact lenses, then you really should!
One of my friends doesn't like wearing her glasses, except for when she's driving, so I have to be her eyes when we're out n about - say if i see someone we know, i have to tell her who it is n where they are! She isn't really short-sighted but its enough to cause a few problems.

How does not straing your eyes help?

Short signtedness is caused by weak muscles or a long eyeball, surley if its muslces then the less you help you eyes, the more work the mucle has to do, the stringer it becomes? Also if you spend a lot of time on the computer or close up work then it must be detrimental to wear contacts as opposed to nowt?

I hate this ancient idea that by straining your eyes you make it better. As far as my optician tells me, you are only going to make it worse by not wearing glasses/contacts, because the more you strain your eyes the worse it gets... plus, who likes walking around in a haze! I think you may be thinking of lazy eye (which I also have) which should be forced to be used, through patches or whatever (which I refuse to do-i'll just live with it).

i have always been told by my optician, as Teao the cat has, that straining your eyes is not the way forward - it can do a lot of damage and its not worth it!

Opticians make money. They'll tell you anything to keep the money flowing. Do the maths.

From simple lessons in biology and physics, I am convinced that wearing glasses does not make sense, espicially when you're doing lots of close up work. It just does not make sense.

But you can believe whatever you please, it's your eyesight,

I don't need to wear contacts or anything, but both my parents do now. I'm not sure about the biology behind it all (even though I do Bio at uni?!) but I don't think putting strain on your eyes would make them better? My theory is that you wouldn't put pressure on something thats already buggered up in the rest of your body, then why would you with your eyes?

Also, just as a quick question, how to cosmetic lenses work? I was thinking about getting some, but seen as I have very dark brown eyes, I'm not sure how well it would turn out (thinking of going green)

But yet opticians, in fact, I should say optometrists, have been to medical school and all the rest of it- their primary function is to improve our health, just as a gp would. And yet I doubt you would say that a gp would put you on pointless medication just to get money off you or the governement for it, would you? And I agree with linkdapink - if you broke your ankle, you would keep your wieght off it, not walk on it so it would get 'stronger'.

You can believe what you want, but just remember that the optometry industry must be worth billions.

Im only a little short sighted and dont really wear my glasses unless i need too, i wear them for driving and sometimes at uni but not very often as i can see most things, i didnt even realise i needed glasses until i was in year 13.

Well, personally, I like being able to see shapes distinctly, which is something I can't do without glasses or contacts! SO I will jsut stick with them. I don't like the strain headaches I get otherwise.

Reply 18

I am short sighted but only very slightly. I only found out a needed glasses a year ago and don't ever need to wear them for a whole day, so is it worth getting contacts if I don't need them for a whole day? Will that make my eyesight better or worse?

I've never seen anyone wearing coloured contact lenses that actually looks good and natural with them. It makes the pupil of the persons eye look larger than usual and I think people look kinda creepy with them in.
