Strathclyde has fairly standard accommodation, but it's big advantage is its proximity to the university. I lived about 3 minutes walk away from my lectures theatres last year, so could leave at 8.55 and still be there on time for a 9am session. You also get to live less than 10 minutes walk from the city centre, which is a massive bonus as well.
I changed universities at the end of last year, and now I'm 25 minutes walk from campus, and a subway ride from the city centre, which makes me reflect on how lucky I really was.
As for the accommodation itself, it really depends what you want. There's limited full ensuite flats, and you'll pay a premium for that luxury. Most of the accommodation will require you to share facilities, which doesn't sound very good, but you get used to it. In 1 full year, I never had to queue for the shower on a morning. All of the flats have communal living areas, with a kitchen and TV lounge, which was very good socially.
The campus is very nice, with some nice grassy areas we used to relax on during sunny spring days.

Apply asap to get first choice. I got my form a couple weeks back and sent it off this week. I want ensuite so went for Chancellors and James Goold. If your not looking for ensuite I've heard Forbes hall is the best one. All this is only relevant to you if your staying in the John Anderson campus (city centre).

£88 is about average for ensuite rooms on-campus in a city centre.

I would apply for Forbes definitely, it was OK last year but they are getting refurbished this summer so that would be the smart choice.

Wish I knew that before I sent off my form..

Everyone I've talked to so far has put down the ensuite halls as their first choice, which means that theyre going to have to let a few people down. I applied for the cheapest ones, as I think they'll be more sociable and it means I get to spend more money on beer.
First choice was Birkbeck and second choice was Thomas Campbell/James Blyth, with 3rd choice being Forbes.

I found no reason to have an ensuite and it certainly wouldn't have been worth an extra £20pw. I was in a 6 person flat so we had two toilets and two showers, and even though we only ever used one shower because it was much better than the other one, there was never a problem in the mornings.

I've lived in both Birkbeck and Garnett Hall. Both are nice but definitely Garnett is more worth it. With a bigger room & wash hand basin.

In Birkbeck, the one I lived in was shared between 6 ppl. The main problem I faced was this. There's a toilet with a small wash hand basin. The other part was a shower and 2 wash hand basins at the same place. So those that went in to take a shower would obviously lock the place and so you can only access the small one at the toilet. I usually have to resort to brushing my teeth at the kitchen sink.

Garnett is a bit nicer. Lived in a 4 room flat. Separate toilet and shower. Those with 6 rooms has 2 toilets/showers and a really nice dining/kitchen.

Been to James Blyth too visiting some friend. Dining/kitchen is not bad..but rooms has a weird shape overall. Makes it look small.

Overall, halls in Strathclyde is nice. Good internet connection too. Would live there again if only they didnt block online gaming and things like skype. =(

*oh..and also heard that Garnett and Forbes are the same

Hope all this helps. =)

Interesting post. :yy:
How exactly do they 'block internet gaming'? I've applied to Birkbeck because it was the cheapeast and I've heard its the most sociable out of the halls, can you confirm this? Also, are there a lot of flat parties which happen and if so which halls do they normally go off in?
Cheers.

I was in chancellors last year, but as for the preferences system they have in place using the forms I have no idea how it works as I didn't even have Chancellors in my top three and I got given it so I wouldn't get your hopes up if u had it as your first choice or anything like that cause who knows where they will end up putting you.

In answer to the 'blocking online gaming', they don't so much block it as their network can't handle peer 2 peer connections but they have been talking about upgrading it to allow it so who knows, as for MSN messenger and skype you can get it to work if you know what to do, u just have to put a few things into the preferences and it works fine.

Party wise it depends on the people round about u, if ur lucky u'll get a few flats that are really sociable and you'll end up knowing everyone in the flats around you after freshers week and that will usually carry on into parties all through the year in various flats around campus as the people u know meet new people on their courses and so on. But Strathy halls is definately a great bet especially the proximity factor
