The Student Room Group

Dont go to the University of Nottingham

Ok firstly this isnt a general rant becasue I have a beef with nottingham uni, it is a statement from the general feeling from Nottingham uni students.

Nottingham uni only care for money, the welfare of the students is of minimal importance. They place huge importance on new buildings and structures with grand names like "inspire", however do absolutely nothing to in inspire or enthuse their own students.

Firsty university of nottingham on halls, hall prices rise by about 10% a year however service decreases, cleaning and catering staff have been laid off meaning that some rooms are only cleaned every other week and that you dont get any cooked breakfast in the morning. Also generally the good quality if awful. When some students tried to set up a facebook group to challenge this: http://nottinghamac.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6116831572 , they were hauled in front of the vice chancellor and given huge fines. The above students were also sent threatening that they would be kicked out of uni of if they didnt stop the protest group.

The university of nottingham is not politically active. The students union is one of the worst in the country. The only thing it does to support students is to warn them about speaking out againsts big brother: there is a link to this on their website but I cannot find it at the moment. Generally the student union are very supportive of the uni and it is the general feeling of the students that they dont have the balls to stand up to them.

The university of nottingham does not obey the law. "In order for you to be legally clamped, there must be notices up where you can clearly see them, warning that unauthorised vehicles will be clamped." this comes from the CAB http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/pressoffice/press_index/press-051222.htm

Howerver if you point this out to their sucurity staff who do the clamping you are going to be threatened and intimidated, even though there are NO signs around the campus carparks warning you off this. When you write a letter of appeal to the uni you will be told that "that isnt a good enough excuse" by the uni officials. Sadly this dosnt just happen to our uni studnets but to visitors as well.

If you try and hold a peaceful rally on campus. You will be thretened by sucurity, then you will have the police called and then the university will demand that people/students are arrested: http://nottinghamac.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7904246666 . But hey it dosnt matter becasue we are only your students right my university.

I could go on... I could tell you about the £8 fine on top of the price of the book for "strengthening" or laminating as you would know it if you lose a book. Or I could tell you how the uni charge you £20 for a new library card if you are beaten up and mugged while almost all other universities provide this for free if the card is stolen.

In shirt just dont go to notts uni. There are plenty of better ones around.

Thanks, I will be rejecting my Nottingham offer now.

You can't just take one person's view!!! I can't believe you guys are so easily swayed! If you read this thread and then say: "Thanks, I will be rejecting my Nottingham offer now." Then obviously you didn't want to come in the first place! There's always good things and bad things about every university.

I just didn't like the place when I looked round last year. Felt like a hospital to me. Maybe on some superficial level I knew all this. Or manbe not. But good post!
Reply 6
I was being sarcastic, of course I won't be rejecting my offer based entirely on the opinion of one person on an internet forum.

Besides, I can't reject it because it is the only uni offering me ABB, so I need it as my insurance.
Reply 7
But, but ... Nottingham is my insurance!! I chose Notts over Sheffield. I'm screwed if I don't get into my other choices (which are very competitive). I don't know what to do if I get an offer.

I have friends at Nottingham, who absolutely love it.

Good point. People shouldnt just take my work. Look at the facebook links. That is 1000's of peoples words. Whats worst is that like I said there is more. I could provide you with loads more links to other groups where students have tried to do something about it and been punished and threatend by the uni.

I'll tell you something else as well. If Notts uni find out who I am I'm going to get the same treatment. Probs a £200 fine and a **** reference when I have to leave if im not kicked out before then.

Nottingham was one of the places I looked around last year and I never even considered applying. It was run like a business, everything was contracted out to dodgy private companies. The person trying to sell their accomodation was thick, and I mean she really was stupid, which doesn't inspire confidence in a University. Academically, it's good, but that place is completely without political activism and seems to generally be full of people who get daddy to drop off some shopping from Waitrose in his Porsche each week. My mother went there in the early 70s and she said it wasn't much different then.

Moved to the Nottingham forum? This should be interesting.

Did you report this to the Police and get a crime number? If so the Uni should have replaced your card for free on production of the crime number.

Unfortunately so many students lose their cards and claim to have been mugged that the Uni have to have this as proof.

Its not all bad. Just bad enough to not go there, you can get into a better uni anyway with the same grades. There are good aspects, it has a pretty campus etc... on the other hand without wanting to be a smart of arse if you dig your head in the sand you can enjoy alot of stuff. Not all germans hated gemany when hitler was in power nor did all iraqis hate saddam. Dosnt mean you would want to go there and live does it?

I'd like to hear from some more people who are at Nottingham.

Is this some form of ironic marketing campaign?

If all the students feel the way you describe, then I blame the students. It's you guys who make or break a uni, it's all about how good the SA is, and what they do for you.
