The Student Room Group

Just did the Macquarie interview

I just came out from the 1st stage Macquarie interview.

Interesting interviewer, and interesting building.
My interview seemed ok. I did not get an AC straight after the interview as they only scheduled AC's before 5.30, and by the time I had finished my interview, it was past 5.30.
So they said they'd be in contact. Passed or failed?

I got asked market questions and technical questions. Also standard competency questions.

How were the techincal q's?

Easy. Did them all quickly, and she asked whether I had come across any of them before, which I hadn't honestly.

Nothing a 14year old couldn't answer.

I dont know if people dont bother reading other threads or searching, but the macbank interview questions are here :

Looks like first round stuff.
well the questions asked in the link you provided aren't going to be much like the ones the OP got (although i know that no interview will you be asked the same questions but in this case it varies enormously)

i would rather have it from a UK perspective than that of Australia

Dont look a gift horse in the mouth. It's better than nothing, which is what you currently have.

The ones I posted will be very similar to the standard competency ones (obviously, since they are the same for every firm)

Yes because people are asking about competency questions...?

They are asking adrian what sort of technical and market questions he got asked NOT competency questions, if you want to join an investment you've already failed the 'attention to detail' quality.
^^^^^

hahahaha LMAO!!!!

bally if you actually (as you put it before) 'bothered to look' i have asked for technical questions which may have been asked just to get an idea of how they are like etc

Apologies. This post wasn't very specific:

examples?

And no I dont want to join an investment. Looks like you have failed also  I dont see why people on this forum are so keen to put each other down? I guess it reflects the nature of IBs with this dog eat dog mentality.

Sorry your first post didn't specify that so I thought I would 'bother' and help you out in case. No harm done
^^^

(1). I never said you wanted to join an investment bank

and

(2). I'm not even in uni so i don't think failing to get into an IB is even one of options at the moment

I was just asking technical question examples just to get an idea of what they are like as currently i have no idea whether they just ask you about the economy or like specifics etc

Kelvin? My tsr name is Kelv

Anyway you will see that actually doji asked were the technical questions hard, adrian answered not really, just your standard technical questions, then academic asked for examples... as in examples of technical questions...

Can't really be bothered to argue, specially not on an internet forum lol.

Sorry to keep everyone on their seats. I completely forgot about this new place =D
I'm new here.

I got 4 technical questions.

1. There is a lillypad in a pond. The pad takes 1 hour to double its area. When the lillypad is at its original size, it takes 48 hours to cover the entire pond. The question is when will it take to cover just one quarter of the pond.

2. What is the simplest way to calculate SQRT(100,000), without a calculator.

3. What is the difference in angles between the hour and second hand on a clock at a quarter past 3.

4. If you won the lottery, which choice would you pick? $5,000 today and that's all, or $1 a day for the rest of your life?

I would appreciate it if you would not blurt out the answers, as some people are inclined to scroll down and look at the answers. Try this yourself, as it makes good practice I'll tell you the answer if you pm me.

I wouldn't call those technical questions but more brainteasers.
Not sure about the second question, I cant be bothered to think about the first, but 3rd is easy and 4th is to do with probability.

just wandering kelv when you said probability, do you mean the prob of the person dying basically ya after certain amount of time??

Yes lol. Depends on their age, loaaads factors actually. But if you're not going to live pass 30 and you're 28, I'll definitely take the 5g.

Inflation would be my biggest concern with the second option.

dam forgot about that. actually it is more about inflation than probability, haha forget what i said. yeah i remember seeing this question and the person answered by saying negative and positive interest rate would affect her decision of taking the 5g or 1 quid.
