k is greater than 0 and less than or equal to 2.

I understand that it has to be greater than 0,as it's modulus, but I don't know where the two comes from?

It would probably be helpful if you sketch how actually looks like, then see for which values of k does the line intersect twice. Then the 2 is obvious.
