Babylon Berlin, anyone?

Has anyone else been watching Babylon Berlin?

It's an absolutely cracking show set in 1929 Weimar Germany; it's about a police detective investigating a pornography ring with deep political implications.

The show absolutely captures the mood; this was the "roaring 20s".. a time of great decadence and sexual liberation. but it was also, for Germany, a time of great political foment. Germany had been bankrupted by World War 1 and there was still great poverty in the late 1920s. Many resorted to prostitution or crime.

There were many German communists attempting to bring about a revolution, and there were also fascist and monarchist groups fighting the communists, attempting to effectuate their own revolution to bring down the Weimar Republic, while the social democratic government attempts to hold it all together in this time of extreme politlcs.

This show is almost like a love-child of Stanley Kubrick and Baz Luhrmann. It's a great political thriller and detective story, but it also has awesome musical numbers. Here's a youtube video of one of the musical numbers set in the main nightclub, Moka Efti.

Yes it is excellent and amazing what you can do with CGI. If I were studying History, then it would have been a good watch over the holidays, although its a bit slow for History reasons. I believe Heimat moves faster. Very good for anyone studying Weimar. I hope they manage to go to 1939 although his books have only reached 34..
Know for weeks that this TV series exists and have watched an episode so far. By reading the description it seems to be amazing.

It really is fantastic. I only found out about it a couple of weeks ago, and I was surprised because very few high-end 'prestige dramas' get past me. The show hasn't got anywhere near the press or recognition it deserves, however when it hits the American market next year on Netflix, I expect it will do very well indeed.

In terms of the show itself, it really is exceptionally good. It's got everything; detective stories, pretty naked girls, morphine, cross-dressing, Moscow gold and communist intrigue. Throw on top of that some musical numbers, a magnificent attention to detail (the sets, the production design, is just gorgeous and you can tell they've really spared no expense to make it a lavish production).

I can't recommend it highly enough, it's definitely up there in the top three shows of 2017, in my opinion.
Omg yess I'm pretty much the only one in my school who does lol, I've only watched 4episodes but German noir is such good television...
