No one is saying the NHS itself hasn’t been prepared, it’s prepared amazingly this winter. But financially it’s unprepared, as anyone in the NHS will tell you, they do an amazing job with stretching resources but that can only go so far.

In other words, the government is taking credit for the hard work and overstretch of the NHS and can’t see how they’ve caused it. It’s like giving a kid a small amount of food and then boasting he made it last all week and later claiming you fed him for the entire week.

The NHS is better financed than it has ever been. It's hardly credible to claim that the NHS is somehow underfunded if there is no limit at which it cannot be underfunded. We could double spending, and there would still be shortcomings and problems.

What the NHS needs is a real look at how it prioritises where its funding goes. There are elements here of preventative spending, shifting the balance of care toward more community based interventions and all that - but ultimately there are questions as to what level of health provision we make for people who are living longer too.

Oh it’s underfunded! It’s underfunded.

We could throw as much money as we want at it and the NHS would still be struggling. Four words. Demand is too high.
