Applying for a national insurance number if 15 ages

Do you have to have a national insurance number if your under 16 to work? And is it a matter of applying for one on a certain webpage or do you just wait till they send you one??
I think anyone has to have one in order to work and usually you have to wait until they send you one. I got mine last august, a month before my birthday but you should still do some other research

Thankyou for the help, is there a way I could contact or apply for one if possible anyway as my birthday was October and I have turned 15 already and was hoping they would have sent it by now?

I forgot to mention that i recieved it just before my 16th birthday so i think thats how it works, rather than after 15th.
It seems like it should come later on in the year. As for applying, im not sure if under 16s can do that
