hey - im def going to imp - loads have told me not to - mostly about the dodgy male/female ratio which ill agree is disgraceful but how much difference can that make in central london for frick sake - with the other london colleges all round (unless u plan on never leaving campus grounds lol) - the other big argument is that its nerdy - what are other ppls thoughts on this?

i think that this years lot are going to change that nerdy reputation, i know a few people who still want to have a great time, even though like you said "other people told you not to"... im feeling some great vibes this year

Nah, it's not half as bad as they think. All the best science students who want to stay in London go to Imperial, so it might be regarded as 'nerdy', but you're only as nerdy as you want to be. If you and your friends go out, play sports...etc then you won't be nerdy. As you said, you're in the middle of London, how much more varied can you get?

At the same time you get a top-notch education in one of the best universities in the world.

new The Times rankings just came out.. Imperial now back up to 3rd. Cambridge 1st, Oxford 2nd, and LSE 4th.

Good news is we have the best student:faculty ratio (7:1), and IC graduates earn the highest starting salary on average (24,000 pounds).

well its gonna be lots and lots of hard work so yeh. and i guess the 'nerdy' imagien comes from the fact thats its basically a science uni. and ALL scientists have to be total geeks beacuse theyre scientists now dotn they?

Well it's rarely that simple. It's the whole school atmosphere that can turn you into a nerd. When you've got three times more assignments and readings than your friend doing sociology, it's hard not to be slightly unsociable and become a nerd, staying in your room a lot. I've seen a lot of fun people become a tad bit boring after graduating from electrical engineering.
Then again, if you're not aiming for the best grades, there's no reason why you can't put having fun at the top of your priority list but in engineering, it seems to me that if you really want to be right at the top, you have to be incredibly intelligent or become a nerd (and even that doesn't always work).
Then again, how exactly do we define a nerd?

lol look how philosophical this is getting - ''define a nerd'' - well i guess - momma always said nerdy is as nerdy does
i think its just that imp is primarily a sciency uni and cuz 'nerd' is associated with scientists the word sticks to the place - but frankly it seems to have an equal mix of boozehounds and bookworms - tho the 2 groups arent mutually exclusive
lol i also think ppl who call imp nerdy are jealous of the clever reputation that goes with being an imp student

1) Imperial, like all colleges, has a diverse student body. There are "buff" and "nerds" both in the mix, as well as gentlemen and scholars.

2) Female nerds can be quite attractive.

And how do you define the difference between a gentleman and a scholar?

Well, I think it does to some extent. But what's wrong with a slightly nerdy reputation? If you want to do science and do it well, then I suspect nerdiness of some degree is inevitable.

A gentleman cannot be a geek

Not true at all. Just because he's a geek, he can be a great gentleman. Take Russel Crowe as John Nash in "Beautiful Mind".
If you don't like movie comparisons and want some more, then feel free to get a life.

IC isn't that geeky. There are (of course) a few..and that tends to tar everyone with the same brush...you know what? some of us are completely normal  there are geeks, "it" people, jocks, the whole range

I'm not a geek and i'm gonna go there...my bro went there, he isn't a geek, my father went there..ok so he's strange...but not a geek...my bf goes there..he's not a geek either...and come to think of it a whole load of mates who aren't geeky..i've only met 3 geeks and that aint bad out of like a whole uni

P.S.
You played the great game Lemmings? What a classic.

Yeah man!

That game rocks
The diggers, the guy that explodes. Such cool levels too. Damn, I got UT2004 which is 5 GB on CDs, and Lemmings less than 1 MB on a teeny square floppy disk. Still charming though - gonna see if I can find it again.
