Law 2008 Applicants

I'm still waiting on Durham - applied to Van Mildert as I've visited a friend there and loved it! Am predicted 37/38 in the IB! Am also waiting on Bristol too! Have three other offers, but I'm just want to hear from Durham - it's my 1st choice! I can't believe how long they're taking to reply! Surley not a good sign! :s-smilie:

Don't worry Stef, Durham are notorious for being slow in replying - just means they're taking more time with it :smile:

I really hope you're right lol!!! Have offers from Exeter, Southampton and Leicester - just going to wait and see what Durham and Bristol have to say! Hopefully they're just playing with me and I'l get an offer any day now!!! Wouldn't mind going to Exeter but really want Durham and if not Durham then Bristol!!!

danfel is right. Durham is notoriously slow, as is Bristol. I'm still waiting for the latter to reply and right now I just want a decision already. But either way, though there are some offers from Durham for law, they hand out the majority of them in March. So you really have nothing to worry about and 36-38 is their typical offer for IB students, which you are predicted. So, I guess patience is key, though it is difficult at this point of time.

It doesn't seem like anyone's heard from Bristol for Law! You're right about my other offers, I'm taking them for granted! I guess it's just a waiting game - will keep checking Durham AES though and hope I see the 'your application has been received by a college'!!

I have no idea. Each university likes to give out their offers in waves. And once in awhile they have hand out offers randomly with no pattern whatsoever. But it has been known that Durham does hand out the majority of its offers, for Law anyway, in March. Not sure whether it's cause of Easter. But they are obligated to send out replies by the March deadline.

I understand the dilemma with Bristol. Though I am not as compulsive as you are annie_wilson. :rolleyes:

I have learnt that logging on so frequently is torture. The waiting is torture enough as it is without me adding to it. Bristol is handing out offers though I think. Someone received one today it seems. It's on the law forum. But let us not digress. This is the Durham sub-forum.

I know the feeling about checking track...I check it even when I kno it won't have changed! I'm sure we'll all hear from the uni's soon....they can't keep us waiting much longer!

i got an unconditional offer. st chad's.

its really quite puzzling for me cause my results are actually quite bad and i have not even completed my studies yet. =P (completing in march) i heard that unis dont really give out unconditional offers till a student completd his/her course of study. is that true?

just wondering, what are your lnat scores?

Congrats! And don't look a gift horse by the mouth. They must have seen something in your application that they liked. Are you an international student by any chance? International students do tend to get lower offers sometimes. But either way, they still must have liked your application. So congrats and hopefully we'll meet in October. :biggrin:

I assume so. They usually send one out, don't they? I think I got one the last time I applied. After the abuse flung at us over this, can the current students confirm whether or not they received reading lists? Cheers.

Well, I got a reading list last year, but it is all recommended reading as I remember, just so that you can start your lectures knowing which country your in, and some very basic law facts. The recommendation is not to buy any books until you're up here.

WRT going to Waterstone's, you'll love it less when your finally up here...oh the money I've spent on books...

I realised that Durham does not offer Family Law as an elective and having interned at a Family Law department in a Law Firm, I am seriously considering doing Family Law in the future.

This may be a stupid question but is it absolutely necessary to have studied Family Law in uni if I want to be a Barrister specialising in Family Law? I read somewhere online that Barristers do not technically specialise in specific areas.

It would be rather depressing to forgo Durham for another uni that offers Family Law as Durham is my first choice and out of my other offers, it is the best uni for Law.

Hope someone can ans my question. I'm not from the UK so I'm not too sure abt the Barrister- Solicitor system.

I wouldn't worry to much. The point of a law degree is to give your an overview of the law, and to pique your interest. You are not meant to come out of it with a speciality. As a consequence, you do not have to have studied family law here to do it later. Indeed, you wouldn;t get to do it till much later anyway as you would have to qualify as a barrister/solicitor before you could specialise. So you don't need to forego Durham. (As far as I am aware)
