Tricky one - if you've graduated to your BA, then a BA gown (ditto MA when your 21 terms from matriculating are up). The advanced student gown is nothing more than a long commoners gown - they look really stupid. If you've not yet graduated, though, I would just suggest avoiding any situation where you might need to wear academic dress!

Three cheers for looking like a tit!

For 23 years I managed to avoid bow ties...

Hmm, this is probably a bit of a stupid question to ask, but what sort of gown should I be wearing now? Presumably it won't be my old commoners gown, but according to the information I've got, the advanced student gown "may be worn only by those [...] who are not Oxford graduates" - so what about those of us who are, then?

According to my college handbook : "All new students (except those who have attended Oxford, Cambridge, or Trinity College Dublin, and overseas visiting students) are required to be formally admitted as members of the University at a matriculation ceremony."

So, unless you want to matriculate a second time....

Ah, you mean the one you wear to the ceremony (i.e. the one that looks like an oversized scholars' gown)? But I thought that one was for the ceremony only?

Not particularly - the vice chancellor's talk isn't really *that* thrilling...

I wasn't thinking matriculation, actually, just in general, because as I said, the information I got didn't make much sense to me.

I'm no doubt going to sound a little too scatterbrained for graduate life, but it's just occurred to
me that I have no idea whether or not I've signed (or even received) the University Contract. Anyone not suffering from brain rot care to tell me when they did it?

I only received mine on Monday. It was sent by the department. They don't send it out until you can pretend convincingly to your college that you have enough money to support yourself for X number of years.

It didn't have any red writing on it, so you can probably just do it when you get there. (if it's not in red, it's not urgent...obviously)

Apparently I was supposed to print off the form myself and send it in, but somehow I missed that so I just did it once I arrived.:dontknow:

No - it's just the first occasion that you're allowed to wear it. Same with the MA - that's the gown that you always see examiners in, with the red hood.

Ah, right, I never realised that - then again, when you see examiners you don't tend to worry too much about what type of gown they happen to be wearing, I suppose.

In the meantime, I have discovered a free bus to the Tesco in Oxford, though bit unsure where half the places it stops at are, but I think one of them goes through the town centre. 4 frozen ready meals for 5 pounds (or is it 5 for 4?) is pretty good value, its just a case of getting there.

Dude there are two Sainsburys really close to you one of them is a 'local' one i.e. it is open really late. Tescos in Cowley is a bit shoddy I have to tell you.

It is, but if cheapness is what he wants, Tesco's is probably a better bet than the Sainsburys in town.

Well you can still use the cheap stuff that Sainsbury's has good value, and they have a massive section of it in the supermarket (behind the square which they are renovating). Tesco's is worse quality I in my opinion, though that might just be in Oxford.

Fair enough. Tesco's on Cowley is the only supermarket in Oxford I'm really familiar with, I'm afraid, because it was the one closest to my college, so it made sense to do my shopping there. It's not actually as bad as it looks at first sight, though.

Were you at St. Hilda's?

No I lived pretty closed by as well, I went there quite frequently, but I did miss the cereals from Sainsbury's.

And Sainsbury's in town doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of weirdos lurking around the entrance doors. That is always a positive thing.

True, that can be a bit creepy, although I suspect at least some of them are lurking around for the people who are daring enough to use the hole in the wall thingies there, rather than the actual shoppers...:ninja:

They are done now (I think) with the new living arrangements, looks great.

Yes I had to fend of more than one potential mugger when I wanted to withdraw money. Bloody annoying really.
