So are you saying you will self-fund the first year of your PhD and apply for funding for the next two years? I wasn't aware that was even possible! Sounds like a good option though; though it must be rather guilt-inducing to have to ask your mother :frown:

As far as I know, it has always been possible but people just didn't do it very often (for obvious reasons). And yes, it is rather guilt-inducing, even though my mother is really lovely about it; I know that her offer is genuine and comes with no strings attached. But in a sense that makes it even worse, because I still feel horrible for taking advantage of her like that - even though I know that if I was in her position I'd say exactly the same thing and mean it.:s-smilie:

I have a 2.1 in my degree and it's a different discipline from my MSt. So not impossible - but of course bearing in mind that my postgrad course is far less competitive than the English MSt.

Sorry to hear that Eifel. Did they give you any reason at all? I hope you are not too dissapointed...

Well, I was very disappointed when I found out about it and especially since my application was first sent for re-evaluation. I applied early for the 2nd gathered field and was re-evaluated until 3rd and then rejected.
If they were going to reject me, they might as well have done that right away instead of keeping my anticipation on for 4 (and a half) months.

I read somewhere in forums that it is highly likely that if you get re-evaluated, you'll get accepted - but as it turns out in my case, you might as well not get accepted.

Anyway, I already have some other offers so I might choose something from those..

Sorry to hear you were rejected.:frown: I'd still say reevaluation is generally a sign they think you're in with a good chance, though - after all, they'd be stupid to invest extra work in your application unless they thought of you as a candidate they'd seriously consider - but obviously it's not a guarantee...:dontknow:

Yeah I don't understand why they need to keep people waiting. I still haven't got a decision, it's bordering on cruelty now. I hope the letter is here today because I'd quite like to go home for Easter this afternoon. I got an email from the history department about AHRC funding for 'prospective' historians which is going to make it even more cruel when I get a rejection letter. I just want it to be over so I can make plans for my future and get on with things :frown:
Looks like the department I applied to haven't finalised their decisions yet.

*groan*
Anyone heard from mphil economics yet?
I haven't heard of anybody who has heard from it. I don't think they've given repsonses yet. I didnt apply but I feel for all of you that did, ye must be driven mad waiting for a response.

My friend got an offer for MPhil Economics yesterday, but I haven't got mine. Both of us live in Nottingham, so I guess they post on separate days?

congratz  What's the condition? Don't suppose you know your college yet...

for the students who apply it's just demoralising. Preparing an application knowing that your chances of actually getting funding are slim is one thing, but preparing it knowing that it's quite likely it'll be thrown in the bin by your own department and the AHRC will never even look at it, is another matter. There's a difference between being told "sorry mate, you're just not good enough" by an anonymous funding council after you've submitted your application and being essentially told the same by your own department (which should be on your side, really) to explain why your application wasn't submitted.

Yup, being told by a personal email hurts, before I'd even submitted it...

Big congrats!

When I got my applied stats offer, I was so excited that I didn't fall asleep at all until 5 in the morning.

I have to get marks in the top third of the 2.i category which will be interesting since I usually only scrape a 2.i, guess I'll have to work really hard until the exams. Shame I didn't put more work into my thesis.
What was the condition of your friends economics offer?

condition on getting a first.:frown:
Just to clarify, only UK/EU students apply for the AHRC funding, correct?

Ah, the pains of being an international. I know the same goes for UK students applying to US institutions. Wish fellowships were offered across-the-board, regardless of nationality!

Well considering the money comes from UK taxpayers, I can understand it. AFAIK they're only offered to EU students because to not do so contravenes EU law. I agree that doesn't guarantee giving them to the best students, but I can fully understand why the research council funding works as it does.

Individual university fellowships are often geared towards international students, though. If you're applying to Oxford you'll have plenty of opportunities to gain funding through the university.
